Although these buildings lost their original function, they did not lose their architec­tural characteristics: their main ornaments remained the richly carved wooden facades and balconies. Lajos Kemecsi Town and Wine in an Open-Air Museum Exhibition Since 1970, the scientific research and establishment plan of the Hungarian Open-Air Museum Szentendre has included the idea of presenting the culture of a mid-mountain Upland market town. The Open-Air Ethnographic Museum was the first to undertake comprehensive research and presentation of the region’s cultural history and historical ethnography from a complex museological perspective. The construction of the group of buildings was based on targeted ethnographic collections and historical archival re­search, technical surveys and building demolitions carried out in previous decades. In this paper, I will summarise the experiences of the creation of the Upland Market Town area, which opened in 2006. The typical upland stone-building culture of the 17th— 19th centuries is characterised mainly by the activities of wine production, wine trade and guild crafts. Grape and wine culture as a town-forming factor is a prominent feature of the region. The white wine of Tokaj, which is considered a Hungaricum, and the prod­ucts of the typical viticulture of Gyöngyös have been popular not only in Hungary, but also in distant European countries for centuries, thanks to long-distance trade. It was this commodity-producing activity that defined the life of the local population in the period of the 18,h-l 9th centuries, which has been selected for display in the museum. The architecturally definable region is also an ecological zone with its own specific farming practices, which is reflected in the buildings and their furnishings on display in the museum.
