382 Abstracts designs of playground equipment, the related technology innovations and relevant contemporary publications. The widely-used fundamental principles of playground planning of the time, such as age-group division and the grouping of playground equipment according to their intended purposes, have been applied until today, even if the technological base and the installations are different. Emőke Nagy Functional changes of green areas in two housing estates of Oradea since 1960 When the housing estates of Nagyvárad were designed, not only the residential and public buildings but also the green areas were indicated by the architects on the type designs, layouts and models of the estates, thus giving a function to the no man’s land among the buildings. During the construction, these green areas were usually created. However, in the case of the housing estates that were built in the 1960s and in the following two decades, the proportion of these areas changed. The public park more and more lost its green nature, instead the public square with concrete structures and contemporary stone statues became dominant, which was perceived modem. However, the areas among the residential buildings were still available and these were suitable for planting trees and bushes. There were problems with the regular maintenance, caring and pruning of plants, since the residents did not belong to a self-regulatory, selforganizing community. The ownership ended at the threshold of the flats, thus many of the gardens and green areas became abandoned. Nowadays two tendencies can be observed regarding the green areas and garden plots at the housing estates. Where the residents took care of them, recreational areas, flower gardens, often vegetable gardens were created, so the community could preserve these spaces with their original function. Where the community was not strong enough, the city administration developed carparks for the residents, so these areas lost their green and recreation nature as well as their community organizing force.
