416 Abstracts the layout of newer estates (Lower Medzev). A special case of the legacy of town centres is when the town itself loses its role. The town centre persists, but gradually simplifies and acquires a village character (Upper Medzev, Stós). (3) Finally, town centres with a market-street structure have more easily retained their layout than those with side-streets. A town centre with a spindle- shaped market street carries with it the possibility of expansion towards the street parts, whereas a similar process can easily marginalise open spaces in sidestreets (Moldava vis-à-vis Túrna). Even more vulnerable than the side- street structure is a historic centre dominated by a loose connection of historic buildings rather than a fixed layout (Stós).
