Hungarian progressive thinking. An inattentive observer may in fact fail to notice the importance of Pest between her lines, as the name of the city seldom occurs. However, in this study, I attempt to reconstruct on the basis of these rare but emphatic diary entries how the young woman remembered Pest, what memories were evoked in her when thinking of the city, and what images were attached to it in her mental world. My objective was to seize the city as remembered: Etelka' s memories of an often idealized city, and how those recollected the relation of city and resident. Yet my research shows that for the self-confident young woman, her social circles created an intellectual world, inherently tied to Pest, which provided a channel to realize her ambitions. Some time later, for her marriage, Etelka moved back to her beloved city, where she lived until her death.
