of 1566, and adjusting themselves to the conditions of the Turkish domination established a new life of themselves. This territory now unfolding before us according to the censuses was characterized by the earlier historiography that after the military expedition of 1566 it had started to become a district of swamps, and that the Turks could not find any tax-payers here. Our sources, however, prove just the opposite. This territorry really was devastated at the end of the century, by the campaign of the Tartar armies marching across here in the year of 1596, making the district unhabitable in many places. 402
