The historical context and the significance of the exhibition were highlighted by some exceptional and accentuated pieces from the collection of the Hungarian Museum of Science, Technology and Transport. The exhibition demonstrated that the bicycle can no longer be regarded simply as a means of transportation or sport. The revolution of cycling has reached several major European cities: the two-wheeler has become the instrument and symbol of a liveable urban environment, social mobility, and sustainable economy. More and more people choose the bike as a clean and cost-efficient transportation alternative, as a lifestyle, or as a means of identity construction and community building. In response to this, contemporary design creates objects en masse, connecting and supporting urban cycling. The exhibition provided an overview of these objects in a series of thematic groups, and was accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue. Realized in cooperation with Budapest Design Week A priority goal for Budapest Design Week in 2016 was to present the various idioms, solutions and means that are used in the works of designers from countries with similar social, economic and cultural traditions and challenges. On this note, the Guests of Honour at Budapest Design Week were the Visegrád Countries celebrating the 25* anniversary of launching the Visegrád Cooperation this year. With the Visegrád Countries being the guests of honour, the exhibition Central Values— Common Heritage in Central European Contemporary Design represented the central event, and showed the most prominent works of contemporary designers from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland and Hungary. It also highlighted the similar circumstances, objectives and sources of inspiration of the four Visegrád Countries, which gradually tend to find their place in the global market. The large-scale exhibition was accompanied by a number of programmes for the trade and for the general public. Hungarian Design Award and Design Management Award 2016 24 September - 20 November 2016 Realized in cooperation with the Hungarian Design Council The most prestigious awards of the Hungarian design profession—the Hungarian Design Award and the Design Management Award—were received within the framework of Design Week Budapest 2016, where the awarded projects were displayed at a large-scale exhibition. The Hungarian Design Award and the Design Management Award are highly prestigious measurements of domestic design awareness and the development of our designed objects and environment. The Hungarian Design Award, announced by the Minister for National Economy, and the special prizes awarded by state secretariats were received by twelve designs in four categories—product, concept, visual communication and student.
