Zsombor Jékely: The Museum of Applied Arts in 2013-15

Exhibition of 15th-17th Century Ottoman Carpets from the Collections of the Museum of Applied Arts, Budapest and the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts, Istanbul Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts, Istanbul 14 March - 1 May 2015 In the spring, the Museum of Applied Arts mounted an exhibition of Ottoman Turkish carpets in collaboration with the colleagues at the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts (TIEM), Istanbul. Material which travelled from Budapest was largely identical to what was shown at the Museum of Applied Arts in 2007-2008. The catalogue of the exhibition, written by curator Emese Pásztor, was also published in Turkish for this occasion. The Budapest Museum of Applied Arts possesses one of the world’s largest collection of Ottoman Turkish carpets, second only to the collection of TIEM. While the Istanbul collection is richer in early pieces originating from the beginning of the 15th— 16th centuries, the collection of the Museum of Applied Arts has a great variety of 16th- 17th century classic Ottoman Turkish carpets. The joint exhibition provided a great occasion to display a selection of highlight pieces, in an arrangement where two collections could complement each other, and fill the gaps - presenting an unparalleled overview of Turkish carpets from the 15th to the 17th centuries. The exhibition was opened by the President of Hungary, János Áder. TAPAS - Spanish Design for Food 6 August - 4 October 2015 In the autumn of 2015, just before the events of the Budapest Design Week unfolded, the Museum opened a large-scale travelling exhibition dedicated to contemporary Spanish design for food. Organized by Acción Cultural Espanola (AC/E), with the collaboration of the Embassy of Spain and the Instituto Cervantes of Budapest, the show provided a rich panorama of the most recent Spanish design as applied to cuisine. It was like a creative taster menu of ‘tapas’ from all the fields in which design plays a role in the act of eating, arranged in three parts: Kitchen, Table, and Food. On display in all three parts were the talents of designers in different styles who have worked alongside outstanding chefs. Collective Imagination - Ibero-American Design Biennial (BIDI4) HOME SWEET HOME - Opening exhibition of the Design Week Hungarian Design Awards and Design Management Awards, 2015 15 September - 15 November 2015 For Budapest Design Week itself, the Museum presented a selection of the material of the Ibero-American Design Biennial, the most important contemporary Ibero- American design meeting, which is held every two years in Madrid. During the selection, BID Advisory Board pays special attention to sustainability, innovation and social awareness by awarding the best projects selected by an international jury. The juxtaposition of mass-produced objects and utopian creations illustrates the important role design plays in shaping the 21st century in the region. The travelling exhibition’s Budapest edition offered a section of this vast material by presenting 60 artworks and 80 panels, with special at152
