Prayer-rug Gördes, late 17 th century/early 18 th century 142 cm x 103 cm Made from coloured woollen thread using gördes knotting. The middle field is embel­lished with branches in blossom each above a red prayer-niche on a white ground. In the bor­dure, on an ochre ground, ran tendrils with rosettes. The carpet once formed part of Prof. Dr. Péter Véghelyi 's protected private collection. Purchased from Mrs. Max Biber, Budapest. Inv. no. 2000.155.1. Cat. no. 20 Emese Pásztor Girl's outfit St. Petersburg, 1875-1880 The outfit is made from white cotton fabric. The top part buttons up at the back and extends to below the chest. It is embellished with stitched-down pleats and supplied with a ruf­fled collar embroidered in white. The ends of the short, puffed sleeves are embellished with ruffled cuffs similarly embroidered. On the bot­tom part of the skirt, between stitched-on appliqué, the same embroidery and ruffling in two bands can be seen. The chiné silk sash belonging to the outfit is embellished with a wavy line bound with rib­bon, and with beribboned floral wreathes linked to one another. The outfit belonged to Olga Vladimirova Verhovskaya, who was bom in 1866. She was a member of a noble family with close links to the tsarist court. Purchased from Mrs. András Mikola, Budapest. Inv. no. 2000.48.1-2 Lady's outfit Hungarian, late 19th/early 20 th century The outfit consists of two parts. It is made from purple moiré silk embellished with stylized plant motifs and with an egg pattern. The top garment is stiffened with whalebones, has a high collar, and is supplied with long straight sleeves. The collar and the shoulders are embellished with pillow lace, beneath which there is brushed ruffled silk. The sleeves are adorned with pleats stitched on obliquely; around each wrist there is a ruffle. At the bottom the skirt becomes broad­er, on account of five wedge-shaped inserts. On the front of the skirt there are flaps and on the left side a pocket; the hem is embellished with three bands of brushed ruffled silk. By the seller's own account, the outfit was worn by the wife of a Szentendre painter. Purchased from Júlia E. Nagy, Budapest.
