The Hundred Children Coloured silk gobelin (ke-si) with hand­painting, mounted on paper, with stretching rods. China, last third of the 19th century. Size: 175 x 105 cm. The large size, detailed composition of this magic picture promising many children and the survival of the family represents child­ren (a hundred boys with two adults) in groups of various sizes boating, playing, making music, eating etc. in a serene land­scape interspersed with flowers and lucky emblems (lotuses, peonies, magic mush­rooms, bats etc.). The contours are woven, the details painted. Certain contours are stressed using gold. Purchased from Mrs. József Csikány. Inv.no.: 90.22.1. 3. Teapot Hard pottery. Yixing, China, beginning of the 20th cen­tury. Signed. Height: 9 cm, diameter at the bottom: 6.5 cm. The teapot is made of brown hard pottery and has a flat, rounded, fine form. It is the work of Chen Pan-gen, a noted ceramics master in Yixing at the beginning of this century. It belongs to the "sloping­shouldered with a flattened spherical body" type from the eighteen basic Yixing forms of the 19th century; the handle of the top is shaped like a buffalo nose. Signed at the bottom; another mark on the inside of the lid as yet unidentified. One side of the pot is decorated with a flowering pium branch incised before firing, on the other side is an inscription of ten characters about tea­drinking. Both are signed: the plumflower branch by Tou Shi-zhong, the calligraphy by Liu Yong. Purchased from Mrs. Gusztáv Mödlinger. Inv.no.: 90.24.1.2. (Györgyi Fajcsák) 4. Hatsu-hana Praying under Gongen Waterfall at Hakone Colour print. Japan, c. 1841-42. Signature: Ichiyusai Kuniyoshi ga (1797­1861). Size: 37.5 x 29 cm. From the series of "Stories of Legendary Wise and Virtuous Women" (Kenjo rep­puden). Published, lba-ya Sensaburo, c. 1841-42. Purchased from Károly Kaltenecker. Inv.no.: 90.11.1. 5. Seated Woman Holding a Flute, with Hand-drum Colour print. Japan, between 1818 and 1844. Signature: Gokotei Sadakage (active 1818­44, a pupil of Kunisada). Size: 34 x 24.5 cm. In a dark blue inset the circular figure of the lucky god Hotei. Purchased from Károly Kaltencckcr. Inv.no.: 90.12.1. 6. The Actor Ichikawa Kuzo Colour print. Japan, before 1833. Signature: Gototei Kunisada (1786-1864; before 1833 he used the name Gototei). Censor's seal and publisher's mark (Tsuta­ya Kichizo). Size: 33 x 20 cm. (A man standing by a door. Colours: two kinds of blue and brownish-red, pale grey­ish-violet.) Purchased from Károly Kaltenecker. Inv.no.: 90.13.1.
