ERY King Stephen Museum, Székesfehérvár ABSTRACT: The measurable osseous material of the IV c. A. D. population at Pécs reflects homogeneity. The general male and female characteristics agree. The taxonomic pic­ture is characterized by the dominance of the Mediterra­nean racial components. The near parallels of the male series allude to the Mediterranean equally, whereas the female series has no well valuable near connexion with other populations. GENERAL DATA In the years between 1958 and 1970 the graves of a Late-Roman cemetery have been uncovered at the site of the ancient So­pianae , the City of today's Pécs. The excavations were directed by P. FÜLEP with the assistance of A. SZ. BURGER. The archaeological and anthropological finds of the graves are pre­served in the Janus Pannonius Museum, Pécs. In the first phase of the excavations 37 graves were unearthed at No. 8 Geisler Eta Street (FÜLEP 1969), later 104 graves at No. 14 Geisler Eta Street and at No. 12 István Place. (The com­prehensive name of the site is "No. 12 István Place.") It beca­me evident during the works that the graves uncovered at three different plots were the parts of the same cemetery,to be dealt with as a single population.
