pianae used to be surrounded by hundreds of graves, forming larger or minor groups of burials. The uncovered part of the cemetery is a part of such a group of graves, the magnitude of which cannot be defined exactly, as it lays under the present network of roads or buildings, respectively. The unearthed part of the cemetery may have been used between 320 and 420 A. D. , according to P. FÜLEP. The very rich archaeological material of the dead, buried according to the rite of Early Christianity, consists of objects in general use in the Roman Empire at this time, so it does not provide a clue to the ethnical character or origin, respectively, of the population buried in this group. Age was estimated for the adult findings (23 - x years) on the basis of four age indicators: the obliteration of the endocranial sutures (O), the spongiosa and upper shaft of the humeral (F) and femoral (P) epiphyses, as well as the symphyseal face of the pubis (S),according to NEME SKÉRI-HAR SÁNYI-ACSÁDI (i960). In juvenile individuals age was estimated by the sequence of epiphyseal union according to JOHNSTON (1961 ), in infants by the state of eruption of teeth, using SCHOUR-MASSLER ' s scheme (1941). In those cases in which tooth was not available, I assessed the age of infants by the length of the long bones, with regard to the table of JOHNSTON (1962). Sex was determined, applying the method of ÉRY-KRALOVÁNSZKY-NEMESKÉRI (1963), and, in the case of measuring, the ischio-pubic index following GAILLARD (I96I), by the analysis of 22 characters of the adult skeleton (15 - x years). The measurements of the osteological material were taken according to MARTIN-SALLER (1957). Cranial capacity was calculated according to LEE-PEARSON (1901),using the porion-bregma height. Stature was calculated according to PEARSON (1899) and also by the method of BREITINGER (1938) and BACH (1965). In classifying the measurements and indices I followed ALEKSEYEV-DEBETS(1964 ).
