6 OUR LADY OF HUNGARY CHAPEL BASILICA & NATIONAL SHRINE OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION WASHINGTON, DC In 2004, His Eminence Theodore Cardinal McCarrick invited the Hungarian Conference of Catholic Bishops to erect a chapel in the National Shrine that will reflect the Marian heritage and unique spirituality of the Hungarian people. The spiritual basis of this project rests in the act of consecration of the country to the Mother of God by St. Stephen the King on August 15, 1038. In their Plenary Session Meeting from June 6-8, 2008, the bishops approved and appointed Fr. Barnabás G. Kiss, OFM to be their representative and liaison in the planning process and construction of the chapel with full authority to raise the necessary funds. The collection of funds will be under the aegis of the Finance Office of the Archdiocese of Detroit and specifically through Holy Cross Hungarian Church, which is serving as the agent for the Hungarian Bishops. You are invited to participate in this worthwhile project that will enhance our Hungarian culture and heritage by providing a wonderful place of pilgrimage for many, many people here on the North American continent. There are already numerous ethnic chapels in the National Shrine and we look forward to making a significant and beautiful contribution to this sacred setting by continuing and promoting what was begun by St. Stephen of Hungary. It is our joy and privilege to honor the Mother of God ! In the very near future, collections for the chapel project will be organized in every Hungarian speaking community and parish in the United States and Canada. Our goal is to raise US$550,000.00 and even in these hard economic times, you have the opportunity to donate according to your means, always aware that your gift will be part of a magnificent tribute. Checks should be made out to “Holy Cross Church" with the memo “Hungarian Chapel,”or you may also donate to the project through your parish or organization and the funds will be forwarded. There will also be opportunities to remember your loved ones by way of a memorial. Further information is available by contacting Fr. Barnabás at: Fr. Barnabás G.
