May 24, 1956 AMERIKAI MAGYAR SZÓ iS E8Y MEHMI MUNKÁS KÁLVÁRIÁJA A Védelmi Bizottság karca a rendőri felügyelet ellen A bevándoroltak országos védelmi szervezete, a Commitee for Protection of Foreign Born, né­hány évvel ezelőtt beperelte a newyorki kerüle­ti bíróságon az igazságügyminisztériumot azok mialt a parancsok miatt, melyeket a bevándorol­taknak adott a rendőri felügyelettel kapcsolat­ban. 1954 októberében a háromtagú bíróság: Medina fellebezési törvényszéki biró, McGohey és Weinfeld kerületi birák. korainak minősítette a pert azon az alapon, hogy eddigelé még egyet­len rendőri-felügyelet alá helyezett bevándorló sem szegte meg az előírásokat. A Foreign Born- szervezet a legfelsőbb törvényszékhez fellebbezte mc-g ezt a döntést, amely az alkotmányt érintő esetből kifolyólag elrendelte, hogy a háromtagú bíróság igenis folytassa le a pert. A tárgyalást most júniusra tűzték ki. Miféle megszabott előírások megszüntetéséért harcol a bevándoroltak országos védelmi szerve­zete a rendőri felügyelettel kapcsolatban? Erre a kérdésre legjobban azzal felelhetünk, ha rövi­den elmondjuk az 57-éves, horvát születésű Frank Borich történetét. 15-éves korában. 1913- ban vándorolt be Amerikába és egy nyugatpenn- sylvaniai szénbányába ment dolgozni. A huszas években otthagyta a bányát, hogy megszervezze a bányászokat. Ez volt a National Miners’ Union s amikor 1832-ben Pittsburghban sztrájkot hir­detett, Borichot a bevándorlási hivatal közegei letartóztatták és megindították ellene a deportá- lási eljárást. Különféle zaklatások és fordulatok közt azóta is hajszolják. Az eljárást egyszer már elejtették ellene, majd 1950-ben újrakezdték Borich élete igv.lett a meghajszoltság kálváriájává. Ameri­kai születésű felesége és két gyermeke van. Folyton belekötöttek, letartóztatták, Ellis Island- re hurcolták, kihallgatások, jelentkezések: soha állandó állást nem vállalhatott többé. .. Semmiféle ország sem akai'ta befogadni, maga Jugoszlávia azzal tagadta meg bebocsátását, hogy nem hajlandó otthonok és családok szétzú­zásában résztvenni. így került Borich rendőri felügyelet alá. Minden pénteken jelentkeznie kellett Ellis Islandon, amig a szigetet céljaira használta a bevándorlási hivatal. Azok a szerencsétlenek, akikkel az Ellis Islandre vivő komphajón találko­zott. figyelmeztették, hogy ez élete végéig igy fog tartani s ha valahol állást szerezne, oda is kiszállhatnak a hivatal közegei és munkaadóját kihallgatásnak vetnék alá. Némely rendőri felügyelet alatt álló bevándo­roltnak orvosi és lélekgyógyászati vizsgálatokat kell kiállni. Be kell jelenteniük az ügyosztálynál, hogy nem voltak az igazságügyminiszter által listára vett szervezetek gyűlésein, sőt szóba sem ereszkedtek ilyen szervezetek tisztviselőivel. Még eddig senkit se vettek elő kihágásért, de a Damokles kardja ott függ a fejük felett és ki tudja, milyen beszélgetés juttathatja őket egy­évi börtönbe, okozhat 1,000 dolláros bírságot, vagy idézheti elő mind a kettőt egyszerre. Bo­rich még szerencsés, mert bárhova utazhat az országban, de a legtöbb ilyen bevándoroltnak nem szabad tulmennie egy a Times Square-től 30 mérföldnvire terjedő körzeten. A bevándoroltak védelmi bizottságának jogi csatái révén most már csak havonta egyszer kell Borichnak jelentkeznie, nem pedig minden héten, főleg, amióta Ellis Islandet lezárták. Az ilyen feltételek ellen harcol a Foreign Born-szervezet a- törvényszékeken. Ha a júniusi tárgyaláson elvesztenék a pert, akkor megfelleb­bezik a legfelsőbb törvényszékhez; amely legfel­ső fokon hozhat- döntést -£z. életfogytiglan -szóló rendőri felügyelet'és S veié >ááro-záklátás ügyé­ben, amelynek a boszorkányüldözés során áldo­zatul esett férfiak és nők ezrei vannak jelenleg alávetve^ A legszélesebbkörü támogatást sürgeti a be­vándoroltak országos védelmi szervezete, mert ebben a harcban nemcsak ezeknek a nempolgá­roknak élete forog kockán, hanem a Walter- McCarran-féle bevándorlási törvény ellen vivott harc sorsa is. Ezt a törvényt még az 1798-ban hozott ellenséges idegenekről szóló törvény min­tájára fabrikálták egy csomó súlyosbított ren­delkezéssel megtetézve. Okkal mondta Allen J. Eilender szenátor (D-La.) a bevándorlási hiva­tal előtt egy 1954-ben tartott kihallgatás alkal­mával: “Ez a törvény teljhatalmat ad önöknek, hogy a helyzetet oly undorítóvá tegyék, hogy senkinek se volna kedve az Egyesült Államokban élni.’’ Támogassuk a bevándoroltak védelmi szerve­zeteit ! Szovjet-japán halászati egyezmény Annak ellenére, hogy még nincs megkötve a szovjet-japán békeszerződés, a Szovjetunió és Ja­pán delegációk egy tiz évre szóló halászati egyez­ményt írtak alá. English-speaking sailors cut that to “junk” and used it to mean secondhand, frayed tags and ends of cordage. Its meaning broadened to include all sorts of used odds and ends that w’ere kept around because they might come in handy sometime. This should be done even if your carour- etor is properly adjusted and the vehicle doesn’t “creep.” • When draining the winter mixture of water and anti-freeze from your radiator, flush the radiator thoroughly and put in a good rust in­hibitor. • Check the hoses and hose connections, fan belt and water pump, and look for any radiator leakage before setting out in hot weather, ® Keep the radiator filled. ★ ARMY WAY: Take a tip from the United . States Army to keep your shirt front and waist­line neat and unwrinkled. When you put on a shirt and before you fasten your belt, take the shirt by the seam on either side and fold it bac... The excess material will be folded neatly on the side, leaving front and back smooth. This is a particularly good idea for the coming season, when men start to take off their coats in the offices. ★ HARRY TRUMAN—at the Four Freedoms Award dinner—told Emil K. Don’t confuse me with facts.” NEW COLISEUM HAS EVERYTHING. AL­MOST : In a letter to the editor of the N. y. Herald Tribune, a reader comments that the new Coliseum at Columbus Circle may be the city’s latest architectural wonder, able to accomodate half a million visitors to the expositions it can house. But the planner’s failure to provide even the minimum first-aid facilities already is being felt. A New Jersey visitor to the stamp show suf­fered a heart attack. He had to be left on the exhibition floor until a private physician could be called. Not hired by the Coliseum, the doctor insisted on payment of a call fee. And when the guard on duty had no money to pay it, the phy- sician accepted as payment $8 his entire cash fund, from the victim himself.
