14 REFORMÁTUSOK LAPJA on various committees, such as the working group on liturgy of the French-speaking churches of Switzerland, and the sociological group of the Geneva Protestant Study Centre. Since 1964 he has been a member of the Executive Council of the Church of Geneva. At the three previous W.A.R.C. assemblies (Princeton 1954, Sao Paulo 1959 and Frankfurt 1964), Mr. Perret, whose mother tongue is French and who speaks fluent Eng- ish and German, headed the teams of translators and interpreters. The appointment of a new general secretary coincides with the merger of the W.A.R.C. and the I.C.C. into one world confessional organization: the World Alliance of Reformed Churches (Presbyterian and Congregational) . Mr. Perret — married, three sons — is expected to take up his duties as general secretary-elect on September 1st and to work for two months with Dr. Pradervand. Dr. Marcel Pradervand will retire on October 31st, after 22 years of service as general secretary; the Rev. Fred Kaan, at present ministersecretary of the I.C.C. will become a departmental secretary of the new Alliance. Information Office WARC What Happened? Hello, remember me? Some people call me OLD GLORY, others call me the STARS AND STRIPES and the STAR SPANGLED BANNER. But whatever they call me, I am your Flag, the flag of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Something has been bothering me, so I thought I might talk it over with you . . . because it is about you and me. I remember some time ago people lined up on both sides of the street to watch the parades and naturally I was leading every parade, proudly waving in the breeze. When your Dad saw me coming, he immediately removed his hat and placed it against his left shoulder so that his hand was directly over his heart . . . REMEMBER? And you, I remember you. Standing there straight as a soldier. You did not have a hat but you were giving the right salute. Remember little Sister? Not to be outdone, she was saluting the same as you with her right hand over her heart . . . REMEMBER? WHAT HAPPENED? I’m the Old Flag. Oh, I have a few more stars since you were a boy. A lot more blood has been shed since those parades of long ago. But now I don’t feel as proud as I used to. When I come down your street, you just stand there with your hands in your pockets and I may get a small glance and then you look away. I see the children runing around and shouting . . . They don’t seem to know who I am ... I saw one man take his hat off and then look around. He didn’t see anybody else with their’s off so he quickly put his back on. Is it a sin to be PATRIOTIC any more? Have you forgotten what I stand for and where I’ve been . . . Valley Forge, Gettysburg, Vera Cruz, Manilla, Marne, Anzio, Guadacanal, Korea, and now Viet Nam. Take a look at the MEMORIAL HONOR ROLLS some time, of those who never came back, it may have been your father, your brother or someone else who was dear to you. They died to keep the Republic free . . . One Nation, indivisible, under God . . . When you salute me you are actually saluting them. Well, it won’t be long until I’ll be coming down your street again. So when you see me, stand straight, place your hand over your heart . . . and I’ll salute YOU, by waving iback . . . and I’ll know that . . . YOU REMEMBERED. Unknown Twenty-First Annual Conference OF THE YOUTH FELLOWSHIPS OF THE CALVIN SYNOD (Conference of the United Church of Christ) AT CAMP KANESATAKE Spruce Creek, Pa. AUGUST 16—AUGUST 22 1970 The President's Page Rev. Albert Hady passed away in California. He was the organizing pastor of our Los Angeles church. Comfort to his loved ones! SYNOD MEETING Our Synod Meeting was held April 27-29, 1970 in Ligonier, Pa. It was one of the best attended synod meetings: although 6 churches were absent WITHOUT EXCUSE, the attendance was between 50 and 60 at each session. “I felt you had a very good conference meeting,” writes Mr. C. H. Lockyear, our denominational representative, “and it was a pleasure to be with you for a most enjoyable and enlightening three days. I think your small group sessions were excellent...” Due to the fact that committees had a scheduled opportunity to meet and prepare their reports, almost every committee presented some recommendation. The most important decisions include the following ones: 1. Each church should send their youth to our camp, but if a church sends five or more campers, they should be accompanied by their pastor and lay counselor (the time not be charged to the pastor’s vacational period). —Youth retreats should be held regionally. 2. More emphasis be placed on coordinated women’s, men’s and youth work through the fall meetings of our classes which should be revitalized as workers’ conferences. Trained Christian men, women and youth should make their services available in particular fields of Christian work to other churches. 3. A survey should be conducted to see if it would be beneficial to have the English section at the front of the Reformátusok Lapja followed by the Hungarian section. Articles on current problems are welcomed by the editor of the paper.
