English Section Dear Readers, SYNOD NEWS ITEMS Our Synod paper, The Reformátusok Lapja, which was founded in 1900, is the oldest Hungarian Reformed paper in America and in Europe. For more than a half a century, it was the spiritual guide and artery of our people and congregations of Hungarian Reformed origin. During the past, it underwent many difficulties, but it has survived. Perhaps the hardest time, was five years ago, when the denomination ceased all support for national religious papers. Our Synodical Council, however, wishing to continue our traditional Paper, appointed Dr. Stephen Szabó, pastor of our Cleveland Church, to continue editing our Paper. The Synodical meeting allotted $1,500.00 yearly support. From this amount, along with paid subscriptions, the Paper had to appear in a more moderate form, but now we shall put on a new form. Our Synod Council, along with our Synodical meeting, which was held in South Norwalk, Connecticut, this year, decided to raise the support of our Paper to $2,000.00 a year, to raise group subscriptions to $2.00, individual subscriptions to $3.00, and to continue our publication in magazine form, half Hungarian, and half in English, and with a better grade of paper. Since the resignation of the former editor, a new editor was elected by the Synod meeting. The Rt. Rev. Arpad George, vice- president of our Calvin Synod, and pastor of the Calvin Reformed Church of Chicago, was elected Secretary of the Hungarian Reformed Federation of America at the Convention held in Li- gonier, Pennsylvania. The Chicago congregation will honor their Pastor at a Farewell Banquet to be held on September 29th. It was during his 22-year pastorate, that the new Church and manse were built. We offer our congratulations to him in his new position, and ask God's blessings on him and his family. ★ The Rt. Rev. Dr. John Butosi and Rev. Arpad Beretz, president and secretary of our Calvin Synod, attended the meetings of the World Council of Churches held in Uppsala. ★ As the new editor of our renewed Paper, I am appealing to you, our second, third, and even fourth generations in our churches. Many of you may still understand or speak Hungarian, and being members of our Hungarian churches, you have shown your allegiance to out churches, their past and their future. You know how dedicated our forefathers were, how they suffered for their faith, the faith in which you were raised, in which you live, and which must be precious to you. Following in the footsteps of our forefathers, in the spirit of true Reformed Christianity, we want to give you spiritual support, and encourage you through this Paper to hold fast to the faith of your fathers, which is now your faith, and to labor and go forward in the Lord’s field. The Rt. Rev. Dr. Stephen Bessemer and Mrs. Bessemer have returned from their visit to Hungary. The Bridgeport Church will observe Rally Day on September 15, with Confirmation classes scheduled to resume on October 12. ★ The First Hungarian Reformed Church of Homestead, Pennsylvania honored their pastor, the Rev. Julius Paal, at a farewell banquet on August 25th, in recognition of his 25 years of service in the congregation. Many of the local dignitaries, and friends of the pastor, attended the banquet. This Paper is your paper. It is bi-lingual for your convenience and benefit. For the past 68 years, this Paper was a guide, a sentinel for your fathers; we hope that you are familiar with it, and that it becomes truly your Paper. Read, cherish and promote this Paper, and be a fellow-worker for it with your articles and subscriptions. As our Hungarian Paper was a link between our fathers, we so hope that it will bind us together, for we have the same religious background, and we could hopefully join together in the service of our Lord, for our Paper was, and remains, American, Hungarian, and Reformed; let it lead us forward and higher to a more perfect life and service till we join our glorious Lord in His Kingdom. FRANCIS VITÉZ, Editor ★ In the September issue of the United Church Herald, an article appears in regard to the Gedeon Acs Plaque Dedication. ★ The Hungarian Reformed Church of So. Norwalk, Conn., will observe their Diamond Jubilee on October 6th with a Worship Service and Banquet. Dr. Ben M. Herbster, President of the United Church of Christ will be one of the main speakers. ★ The Hungarian Reformed Church of McKeesport, Pa. elected Dr. László Berzeviczy pastor of the Church.
