CALVIN SYNOD YOUTH CONFERENCE Camp Kanesatake in the green hills of central Pennsylvania was again the site of our annual Calvin Synod Youth Conference. From August 18th to the 24th this rustic, rugged camp rang out from the hymns, songs and laughter of the 130 youth and adults who attended. The weather was beautiful, too beautiful in fact. Even our spring fed swimming pool provided a warm swim this year. The theme of our conference was, “Is God Changing with the Times?” Rev. Dr. Alexander Havadtoy, the pastor of our Fairfield, Conn. Church was our main speaker. He treated this subject at length for five days showing the many changes in our world, but concluding that even so God is not subject to change. He is the same from everlasting to everlasting. “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8) For vespers we gathered outdoors at beautiful vesper point. Rev. Aaron Elek of our Cleveland West Side Church spoke with great enthusiasm calling us to full commitment to Jesus Christ. The vespers were always an experience in worship. The workshops were back again this year. The Hungarian Folk Life and Song Workshop was led by Rev. and Mrs. Joseph Kecskemethy, Passaic, N. J. Rev. Zoltán Kovács of Johnstown, Pa., was in charge of the Hungarian Language Workshop. Mickey Szilagyi of Fairfield, Conn., led the History of the Reformed Church in Hungary Workshop. The Race Relations Workshop had Rev. Alexander Jalso of Buffalo, N. Y., for its leader. Rev. Dr. Nicholas Sewell of Niles, Ohio taught the Religions of the World Workshop. The Sunday School Workshop belonged to Mrs. Betty Turrell of Fair- field, Conn. In the field of the arts we had three workshops. The Folk Dance Workshop had Kathy Madeja of Spring- dale, Pa., for its leader. Randy Randolph of Springdale was in charge of the Handcrafts. Carl Szabó of Cleveland, Ohio had the Music Workshop. Our conscientious camp nurse was Mrs. Irene Jalso, R.N. The Dean of Men and of Women were two veteran counselors, Mr. Frank Palfi and Miss Sue Szalai, respectively. This year’s camp had participants from three other church bodies besides Calvin Synod. Rev. and Mrs. Alexander Jalso and the campers from their church came from the Buffalo East Side Hungarian United Church of Christ, which belongs to the New York Conference. Rev. Dr. Nicholas Sewell came from the Hungarian Presbyterian Church in Niles, Ohio. He is the Vice-President of the Hungarian Presbyterian Conference. We were also very pleased to welcome in our camp Mr. David Sapos, President of the Bethlen Youth Federation, which is the national youth fellowship of the Hungarian Reformed Church in America. In exchange, Mr. Alex Eszenyi, President of the Calvin Synod Youth Fellowship attended the Bethlen Youth Federation Conference near Trenton, N. J. We were also happy to greet among us Rt. Rev. Dr. Zoltán Beky, President of the Hungarian Reformed Federation of America. He handed over a check for $1,000 from the Federation to support the youth work of Calvin Synod. Elections were held at camp, which resulted in the following youth cabinet: Alex Eszenyi, President; Frank Kish, Vice-President; Kathy Madeja, Secretary; Benie Borsay, Treasurer; Judy Miller, Hilite Youth News Editor; Mickey Szilagyi, Hilite Devotional Editor and John Vincze, Hilite Program Editor. In addition to these, the president appointed Melody Toth as Editor-in- Chief of the Hilite. In looking to the future, the new cabinet decided that a professional athletic director would be hired for camp to supervise all group sports, in order to minimize the possibility of injuries. A parental signature will also be required before a camper will be allowed to join in group sports. It was generally agreed, that we need many more adult counselors and therefore ask each church to send more adults. The closing event was the traditional consecration service by camp fire. Then a long line of campers led to the auditorium for the communion service which followed. The next morning we headed home. We trust that most of us will give more of the light of Jesus back home for having been at camp. For His many blessings at camp the glory belongs to God. Frank A.
