Lesson: John 4:16, John 14:1-12. Peoples all through the ages have believed in some kind of a God or Supreme Being. The prophets and seers of every race taught their people to respect, honor or fear some higher power, personal or impersonal. In many cases this respectful attitude toward this Being was more compulsory than voluntary, though it must be admitted however that this compulsion was rather the result of customs and habits than actual force. We can safely say that the higher and truer a people’s conception of the Almigthy, the better and more advanced the people are. The Old Testament prophets all had their personal conceptions and convictions of Jehovah. To some God was a stone-hearted, unforgiving, retributive Old Man. Others viewed Him as a national Patriach whose pet and select people were the Israelites. A few, however, came to look upon God as a just, impartial Magistrate who would just as much punish the Jews as the Egyptians — if they did wrong. When Christ came, he soon realized that he had plenty to do even in changing the peoples’ ideas of God. He admitted, slowly, that God is just and fair, but — he added — God is more than these. He is primarily a loving Father who has built many mansions for His children. And that this merciful, kind, sympathetic Father has been revealed in me. He is like me and I am like He. Who secs me, sees the Father in heaven . . . Christ’s, conception of God is the clearest, most satisfying and best idea of the Supreme Being, because Jesus fully understood the Father. Frank Nagy. A BIGGER, BETTER, STRONGER UNION — WHY AND HOW? By A. F. A. — Pittsburgh. (Continuation.) Recreation has a great deal to do towards the making of an institution either a success or a failure. When I say recreation, I do not mean parties, dances, games, and fun in general: these are important and necessary, but recreation in such things as drama, plays, lectures, and general education. Today, our young men and women stand in the midst of arts, vast, beautiful and useful; they are surrounded by all the facts of man’s marvelous history; they breathe an atmosphere charged with refinement. These things must be brought out in your societies if you expect them to function properly. Possibly the most important is the introduction of lectures. There are so many things that young people would like to know. For example: From where did man come? Was he created as the Bible says on the sixth day, or did he appear through a series of changes? Are we to take the meaning of day in the Bible as twenty- four hours, or does it have some other significance? Does evolution conflict in any way with (he Bible, or is it the interpretation of a certain section of the Bible? Does man have the so called instincts, or are they just merely conditioned responses, or the stimulus response type of behavior, or are they something else? How did Christianity come about, and how were the people finally won over to it from Mithraism, Zoroasterism, Isism, and Manichaeism? What are these terms? Are they countries, religious, customs, types of work or what? What were the political conditions that have either helped or impeded the rise of Christianity? What is the difference between Buddhism and Christianity? How do we explain the differences in the Bible and that of modern preaching versus historical records and differences? These and many other questions are highly desirous and beneficial in any society. These are some of the things that the young people want to know. Another impediment towards bigger, better and stronger societies is the lack or indifference Nagy Ferenc
