Amerikai magyar reformátusok lapja íi CHRISTMAS AND MISSIONS. H HE NIGHT was very calm. A peaceful stillness pervaded the air. Both the city ■and field were enfolded in a worshipful atmosphere. The shepherds on the hillside unconsciously spoke in whispers until finally all pretense of conversation ceased. — Nothing stirred. — Even the sheep stood so still that in the bright moonlight they looked like beautifully sculptured statues. Great awe and an indefinable expectation filled the hearts of the shepherds, when suddenly a great star shone and a dazzling angel appeared, who said: “Fear not, for unto you is born this day... a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.” Thus the giving of a Great Gift was proclaimed. Added to this came the benediction of a multitude of heavenly hosts praising God and saying: “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace, good will toward men.” Good tidings of great joy! Peace and good will! A Saviour for all the people of the world! Yet it was manifested to only a few people. — To the lowly, pure hearted shepherds, to the three Wise Men, who sought the Truth and the Light; to Simeon, the just and devout and to Anna, the prophetess who served God. (Luke 2nd Chapter.) God chose to tell His great Love and mercy to these representatives of the human race. He left it up to them to pass on this joyful news to their fellow men. The shepherds did not fail God for “when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.” And Anna — “in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord and spoke of Him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.” (Luke 2: 38.) Nearly two thousand years have elapsed since this thing happened. Many have gone or sent some one to proclaim the “good tidings of great joy” and yet two-thirds of the world still lives in darkness. Young Christian Endeavorer of today what have you done to make known to others what God has revealed to you? Have you helped to turn darkness into light? Have you led others to Christ? We will again be celebrating His birthday. As the wise men of old we too, will want to bring gifts to Him, through Whom we received civilization ,good order, progress, peace, humanity, liberty of life and thought and speech — and all that is worth living for. We too, want to show our love to Him. How? He said: “if ye love me, keep my commandments.” And the Captain of our Soul commanded us, His Soldiers to “GO .. preach the Gospel to ALL CREATURES.” “Go!” It is a short, sharp, direct, and explicit command. We, who would give Him a birthday gift should be willing to obey it. If we cannot go in person, we can get a substitute through our influence or by our gifts. Let each C. E. Society appoint a Missionary Committee to stimulate interest in home and foreign fields, where many are without the peace and joy and friendship of Christ. Let the Missionary Committee of the Union help you. So that this be possible send in the name of your Missionary Committee Chairman to Julia Olah, 1946 Bakewell Street, Toledo, Ohio. You, ones of the chosen few, who received through Christ peace an d joy on earth and the assurance of eternal life, will you, like Anna, “speak of Him to all them that look for redemption?” Through the Missionary work of the C. E. will you help to tell the whole world that “Uiito you is born this day.. .a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.” JULIA OLAH, Chairman, Missionary Committee. NE KÉTELKEDJÉL...
