We have been asked how we can better our Union: first, in quality; then, in quantity. We all are aware of the truism in the old phrase: “A chain is no stronger than its weakest link.” Here we have a chain of Hungarian Y. P. and C. E. societies strung all over the country, perhaps some of the links are slightly loose. Perchance some of our societies are, we might say, “Bear” groups, that are industriously engaged in sleepy inactivity during the winter but arouse themselves out of that lethargic state in the spring just in time to prepare for the annual conference. Of course, “Bears” are rare in our Union, let us hope, and we want to eliminate them entirely. So let us adjust the magnifying optics of a jeweler and repair those links if they are ours. A strong chain requires strong links which in turn .need every minute connecting ring. — Similarly a strong Union requires strong societies which need each individual member. So you and you and I are omnipotent wobbly link that our society and the Union are looking for. Returning to our introductory quest, happiness. We, without the use of a microscope, can create happiness in our own society. If every one of us would attend the meetings in the spirit of putting the best we have into it, instead of the all too prevalent mediocre air of indifference, we should find a lasting happiness there. We do have many societies that have already accomplished this very thing. Of their activities we’ll doublessly hear in the big Essay Contest. Certainly you are as anxious as I to know what each society is doing to strengthen the chain. If we are dubious as how to obtain and sustain our interests, we have already been informed of the activities of a few of the powerful links that utilize their meetings in: (1) sundry book projects (beginning with the Bible) varied with open discussions or forums on current topics of the day; (2) in discovering what other young people’s groups all over the world are doing (a fascinating study); (3) in occasional outside speakers, plays etc. All of these, however, require and demand the wide-awake, active and full participation of each one of us in the meetings. Discover and utilize the magic formula, result, happiness! Boost your own society! — Strengthen it right now, then tell the rest of us about it so that we too may benefit. Only so can we become stronger links in the chain! Only thus can we make our a Bigger, Better and Stronger Union! Virginia A. Esterhay. REFORMÁTUS ÖNTUDAT. Rovatvezető: Balogh E. István lelkész. KIVEL TANÁCSKOZZUNK? Mindenek előtt: Istennel. Ha az egyházi életben valaha szükség van az Istennel való társalkodásra, az imádkozásra: sokszorosan szükség van arra akkor, amikor a lelkészi állás vár betöltésre. Hiszen igaz, hogy a lelkész nem maga az egyház, — de az egyház előhaladása, fejlődése mégis sok tekintetben függ a jól megválasztott lelkésztől. Csak az imádkozó lélek remélheti azt, hogy nemcsak helyesen választ, hanem a választás folyamát is békességben, lelkek összhangjában, mindenek megelégedésére folytatja le. Az imádkozó lélek bízik Istenben s meg tud nyugodni Istennek akaratán. Mert a választásnál mindig Istennek akarata érvényesül, ahol a választók maguk imádkozó lelkek. Ahol nem kortesfogások, nem egyéni érdekek, nem külső befolyások vezetnek bennünket: ott mindig és mindenkinek meg lehet nyugodni a választás eredményén. Ezért van szükség arra, hogy lelkészválasztást is mindig az imádkozó lélek vezesse s legfőbb tanácsadónk legyen: maga az Isten. Ez nem azt jelenti, hogy gondolatainkat ne közöljük másokkal s mások gondolatait ne hallgassuk meg. Tanácskoznunk kell egymással is egymás között is. Ennek a tanácskozásinak két követelménye van. Az első az, hogy ott is Istennek lelke vezessen bennünket. Ahol az egymás iránti szeretet, megbecsülés, mások véleményének tiszteletben tartása vezet bennünket: ott a tanácskozás sohasem durvul el s legfőbbképen: sohasem eredményez haragot, gyűlölködést. A másik követelmény az, hogy mindig tárgyilagosak legyünk. Érveink és indokaink mindig a dolog lényegére vonatkozzanak. Mérlegeljük azt, hogy a jelölt valóban Isten leikétől ihletett lelkipásztor-é ? vizsgálgassuk előéletét, képzettségét, jelen munkálkodását, szóval azokat a tulajdonságait, amelyek a lelkészi állás betöltésénél valóban lényegesek. És ne az vezessen bennünket, hogy ennek ilyen hangja van, annak amolyan rokonsága üti a vasat, a harmadikhoz pedig talán a lányunkat adhatjuk majd férjhez. A válasz
