ADVENT.

Úgy fordíthatnánk le magyarra, hogy “közeledés”.

Közeledés a legszebb, a legszentebb ünnephez, Jézus születésének ünnepéhez, amelyet mindennap közelebb hoz hozzánk az idő. Nehány hét csupán s Isten kegyelméből itt van ismét karácsony ünnepe.

Nem volna azonban igazi adventünk, ha csak a karácsonyi ünnep időbeni közeledését értenénk alatta. Nekünk magunknak is kell közelednünk karácsonyhoz, annak szelleméhez, a Jézus leikéhez. Közelednünk kell a Jézus szere- tetében, alázatosságában, jóságában, áldozatában. Ha ezt nem cselekesszük, reánk nézve nem jelent semmit sem az “advent.”

Törekedjünk tehát, hogy legyen mindnyájunknak Igazi adventje.

Calling to account

To the attention of Rev. H. B. Master, Secretary of the Western Section of the Alliance of the Reformed Churches holding the Presbyterian System.

(M.) The honorable committees of the American Protestant Churches and, among those, the representatives of the Presbyterian and Reformed Churches, went over several times to Transsylvania, an occupied territory of Rouma- nia, to investigate the injuries of the minorities, especially of the Transsylvanián Hungarian Reformed congregations. Dr. Beach and Dr. Schaeffer, as prominent members of those committees, know very well the many injustices suffered by our Brethren in Transsylvania. These were published by them in a large volume and there was a little hope that their testimony, taken before the world, will stop those illegal actions from the part of the Roumanian Government,

Now, Mr. Julius Maniu, the present Premier of Roumania, who was born and educated in Trannsylvania, whose grandfather was a hero of the Hungarian war of Independence in 1848, whose father was a judge of the Hungarian Supreme Court, promised about a year ago, when he took over his office, to stop every illegal and purposeful actions. He promised that he will not expropriate Hungarian churches and schools and that he will not tolerate anymore the persecution of the Hungarian language and civilization.

Of course, his promise remained a promise only. For illustration we may read a report of a Hungarian journalist, according to which, a delegation of Premier Maniu’s own birth- county, Szilágy, visited him and asked him to correct the injusties they suffered in a year in their own County, as follows:

1. There was closed up by the authorities the school of the Reformed Church of Szilágysomlyó; they drove out the Hungarian teachers and the children, and it was used for the Roumanian school, though it was built by the Reformed people of Szilágysomlyó from their own money.

2. The Roumanian Government took away without any indemnity the school of the Reformed Church of Szilágype- recseny, which was erected from the money of the congregation and they are keeping up a Roumanian public school in it at present.

3. The Roumanian State has robbed the Magyarbaksa Reformed Church of her school with the house used by the teacher, with the lot and with 8 acres of land.

4. The Roumanians took away the Sarmaság Reformed public school.

5. In Szamoscikó they robbed the old schoollbuilding and lot of the Reformed Church.

<5. The Roumanians expropriated two

properties with buildings of the Reformed Church of Szilágybagos.

7. They took away the school-building with two rooms and other buildings belonging to the school and about an 8000 square yard garden of the Rer formed Church of Szilágyballa.

8. They expropriated the lot of the Hungarian State school given by the Reformed Church of Tasnádszarvad.

9. They robbed at Varsolcz the Reformed Church’s old house for the teacher with school room and other buildings belonging to it.

10. At Szilágyszeg they took away from the Reformed Church the school house and lot .

11. At Zsibó they took away without any indemnity the building and lot of the Hungarian Clubhouse and they moved into the building the Roumanian sheriff and they are using it without any rent. From that time there isn’t any Hungarian Club in Zsibó.

12. At Szilágykövesd Baron Árpád Kemény erected a Hungarian school at his ow(n expense and they robbed it also.

13. They robbed, without any indemnity, the Szilágy county estate of the Rom. Cath. College of Nagykároly and their fundations also.

That delegation was not from our congregations located in Szilágy County, but it was from the County itself. They counted simply the injuries without any leaning toward our Reformed Church. They counted the injuries which happened in one County in about a year, under the governing of Premier Maniu. And we must not forget, that Szilágy County is only one of the 20 Counties occupied by Roumania.

They counted up 13 cases, from which 10 cases are to the damage of our Trannsylvanian Reformed Church. Our Brethren in Christ are those starving on the most part from the Roumanian Government, because they are Hungarians and they are not followers
