z AMERIKAI MAGYAR REFORMÁTUSOK LAPJA would be impossible ever to produce a paper that would receive the loyal support of the Magyar people in America, and it seemed as though we were calling Dr. Harsanyi, who already was overworked by the demands of his large parish, to an impossible task. He felt confident, however, that an interest could be built up. Quietly he went to work, with many sacrifices and self- denials, and month by month he saw his labors rewarded in a constantly enlarging circulation. To encourage him in his good work, the Board told, him that when the circulation reached^ figure sufficiently large to justify increasing the size of the paper, it would be done. For the first time in the history of this paper did it happen, that in two years we have received more than twelve hundred new subscribers. Dr. Harsanyi deserves great credit for the splendid work he has accomplished. The Committee on Foreign Work of Pittsburgh Presbytery, under the direct supervision of Dr. Montgomery and Dr. Losa, have cooperated very loyally and helpfully with Dr. Harsanyi to make good results possible. They have placed every facility at his disposal, encouraging him and rejoicing in his success. Dr. Harsanyi has taken occasion repeatedly in his communications to the Board, to refer in the most appreciative terms to the kindness and sympathetic helpfulness of these bre- thren.This feeling of mutual confidence has been a large factor in the success which has attended this work during the past two years. There are two very distinct aims which the Boards have in view in publishing the “Reformátusok Lapja”. The First and most important aim is to promote the growth and development of the Protestant faith among the Magyars in America, and to supplement the efforts of the Magyar churches and ministers This can only be accomplished by the publication of a distinctively this policy and we believe that the results have fully justified our position.. The second aim is to promote Americanization. The closing of the world war has brought all the people of America into a closer bond of sympathy; it has broken down barriers that can never be erected again. The wall of separation between the American and “the foreigner” has been removed, and there will be more of friendly contact and fellowship between them. Correspondingly the wall of prejudice and suspicion, and race superiority which has divided the various classes of immiidőben a Reformátusok Lapjának ügye nagyon lehangoló helyzetben volt. .A Tanács már úgy érzett, hogy szinte lehetetlen lesz bármikor is olyan magyar egyházi lapot kiadni, a mely az amerikai magyar reformátusok hü támogatását meg tudja nyerni, — és szinte egy lehetetlen feladatra látszottunk elhívni Dr. Harsányit, a ki nagy gyülekezetének ügyeivel úgy is tulon túl el volt foglalva. De ő úgy érezte, hogy fel tudja költeni a lap iránt az érdeklődést. Csendesen munkához fogott, feláldozással, lemondással dolgozott, és munkáját megjutalmazva látta az előfizetők hónapról hónapra való szaporodásában ........... . .Lelkesítésül meg Ígértük neki, hogy a mint megfelelő számú előfizetők lesznek a lap körül csoportosulva, — meg fogjuk nagyobbitani a lapot. Először történt e lap életében, hogy két esztendő alatt a szerkesztő több mint E£ER KÉT SZÁZ uj előfizetőt tudott légyen szerezni. — Dr. Harsányi nagy elismerést érdemel azért a kitűnő munkáért, mif ő végzett. A Pittsburg Egyházmegye Külföldieket Gondozó Bizottsága, — melynek é- lén Dr. Montgomery és Dr. Losa urak állanak, — minden hü segítséggel ott állott Dr. Harsányi oldala mellett, hogy a fennti siker elérhető legyen. Ők minden eszközt rendelkezésére bocsátottak és lelkesítették őtet s együtt örvendtek vele a sikernek. — Dr. Harsányi az ő jelentéseiben, a miket a Tanácshoz küldött, több alkalommal a legnagyobb e- lismeréssel szólott a nevezett urak által nyújtott segitségről. A közös bizalom jelentékeny tényező volt a két év folyamán elért siker ellőidézése körül. A Tanács két nagy czélt tart szemei előtt mikor a Reformátusok Lapját kiadja. Az első és legfontosabb czél, — hogy erősödjön a református vallás a magyarok között Amerikában, és hogy a magyar gyülekezetek és ezeknek lelkipásztorai segítve legyenek egyházi munkájokban. Ezt a czélt csakis egy határozottan és kizárólag vallásos szellemű lap kiadása által lehet elérni. E- zen felfogásunk mellett mindenkor kitartottunk és az eredmények igazolták felfogásunk helyességét ..................... . A második czél az amerikanizálodást elősegíteni. A háború bevéződése az A- merikába vándorolt népeket közelebb hozta egymáshoz, és olyan válaszfalakat rombolt le, a melyek többé nem fognak emelkedni közöttünk ........................... ., A válaszfal amerikai és külföldi között már nem létezik, — és az összeköttetés közöttünk mindinkább bensőségesebb lesz.
