AMERICAN Hungarian Journal Hungarian Church Sold in Youngstown, Ohio January, the 545 Management Group made known its dream of transforming Our Lady of Hungary Church into an ethnic heritage center. As of this month, the 501(c)3 group, a nonprofit organization, now owns the former church, rectory and pavilion with green space that it bought for $1 and other considerations from the Diocese of Youngstown. The new name is Youngstown Heritage Center, which eventually will showcase ethnic displays in the former sanctuary. The altar and statuary have been removed. Our Lady of Hungary merged with Sts. Peter and Paul Croatian Catholic Church and St. Stephen of Hungary Church as Holy Apostles Parish in the Parish Implementation Plan. The last Mass at Our Lady of Hungary was Feb. 12, 2012. A transition team from the parish assessed locations and finances before deciding to close the church, which dates to 1929. Bob Barkó Jr, is president and spokesman for 545 Management Group, which also includes Dennis McBride, former head of Our Lady’s parish council, and George Kalosky, whose grandparents were charter members of the church. Barkó noted that even as the parish team decided to close the church, there was talk about how to save it. Mindszenty Hall, next door to the church building, was sold to Aut Mori Grotto. Funds from that sale paid debts of the church, Barkó said. Barkó said the 545 group had received a $14,000 donation toward its capital campaign, whose goal is $400,000. A recent event, a Night at the Races, raised $2,000 toward the cause. Now that the 545 group officially owns the property, Barkó said a new roof, new heating and cooling system and handicapped-accessible renovations are on the agenda. The cost is estimated at $220,000. “Youngstown Heritage Center would show the history and heritage of the city. It’s an anchor on the West Side,” Barkó said. The 545 group envisions the center being open Fridays through Sundays. The Rev. Joseph Rudjak, pastor of Holy Apostles Parish and president of the Ethnic Heritage Society, said the heritage center would preserve the craftsmanship and legacy of Hungarian immigrants who built the church. It exemplifies Carpathian iconography and symbols of the Transylvania region, the homeland of many founding members. The church’s wooden ceiling is a legacy of the logging background of Hungarian immigrants who became expert brick layers in Youngstown industry. “The center would be valuable as an educational tool so that the wonderful contributions of ethnic groups would be preserved,” Father Rudjak said. He added that such a center has a role to play to educate future generations and would be part of a network in the city. The pastor said the center would highlight the city’s cultural diversity and the important contributions that immigrants made to churches and building the community, vindy.com Hungarian Jews demand resignation of government appointee Hungarian Jewish leaders demanded the resignation of a key government appointee and threatened to boycott governmentsponsored events marking the 70th anniversary of the Holocaust in Hungary. In an unusually strong statement posted on its website, the leadership of Mazsihisz, the official Hungarian Jewish umbrella organization, said they were “aghast and find incomprehensible” the “relativization of the Holocaust” by a new historical institute called Veritas, which the government established in November. Mazsihisz demanded the resignation of Veritas Director Sándor Szakaly, who in a recent interview called the 1941 deportation of Jews to Kamenets- Podolsk, Ukraine “a police action against aliens.” In July and August 1941, about 18,000 foreign-born Jews who had sought refuge in Hun-Andrew Friedman: Jewish community mourn Andrew Friedman and Ariel Sharon Former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, who led troops in most of Israel’s major wars, died January 11, 2014 after being in a coma since 2006. Most of them were among the more than 23,000 Jews murdered by the Nazis at Kamenets-Podolsk at the end of August 1941. The Mazsihisz statement urged politicians not to use the Holocaust anniversary as a political tool in the run-up to elections this spring, and asked “all concerned” to refrain from “rewriting our past.” The statement added that Mazsihisz is “seriously contemplating refraining from participation in the events of the Holocaust Year” because of Szakaly’s statements and several other issues. These include “the lack of information about the ideology” of a new government-sponsored Holocaust memorial center and museum slated to open in April; the plans to erect a monument to the German occupation of Hungary; what it said was the “falsification of history” in a series of broadcasts on Hungarian Radio, and recent attempts to rehabilitate the memory of Hungary’s World War II leader Miklós Horthy. forward.com Hungarians in Hollywood - in 3-D: Andre de Toth 3-D films: they are everywhere nowadays. From the most recent version of The Hobbit to X-Men, Captain America, and the Budapest-filmed 47 Ronin, filming in 3-D is more popular than ever. But this is nothing new. In the last century, during the original 3-D craze, sci-fi and horror films frequently utilized 3-D techniques to give audiences an extra thrill. The most successful 3-D film of the era was House of Wax, directed by Hungarian émigré Andre de Toth. Don’t be fooled by the name, de Toth was born Endre Tóth, who only added the aristocratic sounding ‘de’ once in America. Long before he was directing Hollywood blockbusters like House of Wax and The Bounty Hunter, de Toth was writing plays in Budapest. He garnered the attention of Hungary’s most internationally famous playwright, Ferenc Molnár, who took him under his wing. It was in Hungary that de Toth began his career in film, directing five films before World War II broke out. De Toth fled to England, where he worked with fellow Hungarian, and film icon Alexander Korda before emigrating to America, and moving to Hollywood in 1942. De Toth’s first films were low budget; he built his reputation in Westerns, bringing an innovative noir style to the genre. It took until 1953 for de Toth to find his greatest success in directing House of Wax, starring Vincent Price. In addition to being the highest grossing 3-D film of the 1950s 3-D craze, it was also the first of its kind to be filmed in color. The horror movie packed cinemas and drive-ins across America, making the director famous. That he had a 3-D blockbuster is somewhat ironic: de Toth only had one eye, and couldn’t appreciate the effect. De Toth was never able to repeat the huge success of House of Wax, though he did leave his mark on such films as Lawrence of Arabia and Superman in the capacity of Second Unit Director. Others believe his real value as a director came in his low budget crime films. Among his fans is Quentin Tarantino, who dedicated Reservoir Dogs to Hungarian Andre de Toth, ppmhungary.wordpress.com/ 11 11 1 " ■ ..........■ 1 1 11V ■' "" 1 "" 1 Our advertisers make it possible for the HÍRLAP to appear.
