An Afternoon of Music With Judith Neslény - Pianist Richard M. Nixon Presidential Library August 18th, 2013 As I walked into this prestigious library, I immediately was ready for a memorable experience. I was not disappointed. Ms. Judith Neslény, a noted Hungarian pianist, composer and scholar elegantly graced the stage and took her seat at the Steinway Grand. This piano which belonged to the famous pianist and composer, Roger Williams, was donated by Mr. Williams to this Library, in recognition and appreciation of the many accomplishments Mr. Nixon made during his tenure in the White House. (Mr. Williams was also a welcomed performer at this Pennsylvania Ave residence.) She began her program with the Mozart Sonata K. 333 in Bb Major. From the very first notes, her tone, facility and musicality were recognized. Her passagework sparkled and the intellectual perspective so apparent. Some might have thought that the pedaling was a bit excessive, but nevertheless it was a stunning performance. The Schubert Impromptu Op. 142, #3 (Thema con variazione- “Rosamunde”) was rich in color, sensitivity and impressive technique. Ms. Neslény’s performance set a high standard of how this composition should be played! The extremely difficult Schumann Novelette Op. 21, #8, was presented with finesse and panache. Her knowledge of the various themes were brought to the forefront and left our imagination to think of how the stories should unfold. The last on the program were The Dances of Marosszék by Zoltán Kodály. Ms. Neslény informed the audience that this famous Hungarian composer had been one of her teachers in Budapest. She also admitted, with a smile on her face, that Mr. Kodály was very “strict and critical”. I am confident (after personally meeting Madame Kodály) that the late composer was extremely pleased hearing his pupil give such a tremendous performance of his composition. The audience was overwhelmed by this magnificent recital and acknowledged with a standing ovation. After Ms. Neslény said “It is time to go home!” she succumbed to an encore. To this reviewer, I was stunned that she was to play the Mendelsohn “Rondo and Capricicioso”. This is a major composition in a pianist’s repertoire and to perform this difficult work after an exhausting program was truly Her performance Premier of Klaudia Kovács’ & George Adams’ New Film Multi-award-winning filmmakers, George Adams and Klaudia Kovács, premiere their latest feature-length documentary, Touche: A Blind Fencer’s Story, at the Big Bear Lake International Film Festival. Bolton persevere as the Olympic sport of fencing helps her gain the much needed self-assurance and practical skills to cope with her new circumstances. The sport requires thick protective jackets, masks, gloves, and swords, yet Bolton and four low/no vision fencers in the film can pick up an epee, challenge a sighted fencer, and win! The audience showed again their sincere appreciation and rose in unison to their feet. In the late summer of August, the Nixon Library was treated to this distinguished artist sharing her gifts with the public. This was by far the most moving and memorable experience this reviewer has had in a long time.
