AMERICAN MITE',Erf^E3lf^ Hungarian Journal Arnold’s Reforms In Ashes and California’s Future An analysis of the 2005 California Special Election By: Ernie Könnyű The excellent reforms for California championed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and the Republicans collapsed into ashes Tuesday with a prom­ise of a rising Phoenix to come. Arnold’s fundamental and accurate point in his reforms was that the govern­ment unions have too much power in Sacramento. So, he came up with what he judged were reasonable schemes to cut those unions down to a more workable political size. He went after the teachers with Proposition 74 by extending their probation­ary period. He tried to reduce the government unions’ political power through Proposition 75 by limiting their use of dues for political donations. It was much the same with Proposition 76 limiting government spending that is so dear to government unions. Finally, the Governor went after the Democrat politicians that unions control with their purse strings by redrawing their rock-solid unbeatable districts using Proposition 77. This head-on direct confrontation proved the Governor’s undoing Tuesday. Yes! He took on much more than it was wise. The unions had no choice but to fight him...and they nearly gutted him politically. They used their unlimited amazing campaign spending to first reduce the governor’s popularity with the voters and then legally bought the special election by attacking the propositions. The latest figures show the unions outspent Arnold almost two to one. The union spending was so obscene that it laid the foundation for another initiative fight. This “good government” initiative would adopt the federal system of political donations to unions and, this time, to companies too. No more union dues sourced donations or corporate checks for politicians. Donations in state races would be limited to voluntary political action committees and individuals. Arnold hinted at this scenario during last month. The governor also suffered under poor timing for Republicans. The Bush administration’s decision this year to not adopt a time certain withdrawal plan from Iraq is devastating with the voters. Excessive federal spending on rebuilding New Orleans without currently paying for it also hurts. Finally, the collapse of will by the Republican controlled Congress to control the inflation driving deficits painted Republicans every­where as irresponsible. Let me give you a sad personal note on deficit control in Washington! Earlier this year I asked Congress­man Jerry Lewis, chair of the House Appropriations (read spending) committee, why the Republican con­gress kept creating several hundred billion dollar deficits every year. He knew personally about the messy House Republican floor fight I created 17 years before on deficit spending. He replied that the chief cause was Iraq and that the rate of deficit increase is decreasing. My! Oh my! And, of course, that was before New Orleans. Lessons were learned by Arnold Schwarzenegger, a relative newcomer to state politics, in this special election. For sure, he won’t publicly talk about “kicking the nurse union’s butt” keeping in mind that his own might come into question. As a final comment on this election I note that the issues the governor raised were valid and will clearly resurface next year in one form or another. As to the governor, he has been wounded but he is still the governor. Looking ahead, his vigorous personality and enormous energy will do him well with both the Democrat controlled legislature and November’s electors. Ernest L. Szerenke Bodnar (Mrs. Kaprinyak) Phoenix, Arizona France Plans to Deport Rioters PARIS - The rioting that has engulfed France abated significantly as authorities imposed curfews and said they would deport noncitizens con­victed of participating in the violence. Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy announced that immigrants who were not French citizens and were convicted of rioting would be deported. Many of the rioters are second- or third­­generation French citizens whose families emigrated from Africa. Sarkozy said about 120 immi­grants had been convicted in fast-track trials of about 1,800 suspects arrested since the riots began Oct. 27. Prefects, the top law enforcement officials in France’s administrative regions, will be authorized to strip legal immigrants of their residency status as a result of criminal convic­tions, Sarkozy said. The announcement reflected the hard-charging style that has made Sarkozy the most prominent and con­troversial figure in the government’s response to the riots. Detractors accuse him of using inflammatory language that has worsened the mayhem, whereas his admirers say he is a rare member of the French political elite who is in touch with the reality of the streets. Magyar siker Amerikában Dupla KáVé turné Kanadában és az Egyesült Államokban A Pongrátz András által szervezett amerikai és kanadai turnén szerepelt Edmonton, Calgary, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Windsor, London, Brantford, Toronto, Niagara Falls és Ottawa Kanadában. Aztán New Brunswick, Cleve­land, Fairfield, New York, Boston, majd Wilmára fittyet hányva Florida: Day­tona Beach, Hollywood, Venice, Plant City és Pompano Beach az Egyesült Államokban. Igen, négy hét alatt ezt a turnét csinálta végig a Magyarországon már jól ismert zenekar. A Dupla KáVé tagjai: Köteles István és Váradi Jenő. Velük tartott Köteles Krisztina (tulajdonképpen Lantos Krisztina, aki a Dupla KáVé szövegeit írja), István felesége, Pongrátz Andris szervező és Csömör György zenész-technikus. Az amerikai turné két okból is egyedülálló, részben, mert a csapat kilen­cedik, vadonatúj albumának Amerikában, ezen körúton volt az ősbemutatója, részben pedig mert erre a fellépéssorozatra a Dupla KáVé-ból “Tripla KáVé” lett. A zenekar ugyanis átmenetileg kiegészült egy harmadik zenésszel, Csömör Györggyel. így együtt remek hangulatú koncerteket és bulikat tartottak Amerika szerte, a magyar közönség legnagyobb örömére! Az egy hónapos koncertkörúton összesen majdnem négyezren táncoltak és mulattak együtt a többszörös platinalemezes együttessel. A műsorokon ott voltak a pici gyerekektől kezdve a szülők, a nagyszülők, és akár hiszik, akár nem, sok­szor még a dédszülők is együtt énekelték a régi slágereket a magyar fiúkkal! Például a “Kár összeveszni velem” vagy a “Szomorú vasárnap” című dalokat. Ki ne emlékezne e régi, magyar slágerekre? Megkérdeztük a Dupla KáVé-t, hogy érezték magukat nálunk, Amerikában: István - Nagyon jó érzés számunkra ilyen messzire az otthonunktól ennyi kedves magyarral találkozni. Szinte mintha otthon lennénk! Sokszor érzünk így, és köszönjük a sok szép szót, amit kaptunk Tőletek. Bár szinte mindig rohanunk, rengeteg szép helyen jártunk, sok csodát láttunk, s talán dalt is írunk ebből a turnéból! Köszönjük, ,hogy itt lehettünk, Köszönjük a mag­yaroknak és külön köszönjük szervezőnknek, Pongrátz Andrisnak! Szívesen jövünk újra. Jenő - Az igazat megvallva már nagyon hiányzik a családom, és alig várom, hogy újra láthassam őket, mégis azt kell mondanom, fantasztikus élményekben volt részünk, nagyon jól éreztük magunkat köztetek.
