AMERICAN Hungarian Journal Jn memóriám: Dr. Károly Héthalmi-Pátli by Klári Vcrec/.ky Malis There’s a land beyond the river, Thai we call the sweet forever... Another of our brothers heard "the golden bells" and has gone "home" to that land beyond the river. I)r. Karoly Iletlialmi-Path lias been eulogized and we have bid him adieu. And the imposing storv of his meaningful life here on earth was related to those attending his funeral. Bro. Ilethalmi, as he was best known, brought a type of beauty into our world whieh will be appreciated not only bv his beloved family but also by the Hungarian community and its various congregations. His (iod-given talents in the field of music and composition will remain long after the last segments of his earthly shadows fade away. Although the suffering he endured these past two years denied Bro. Ilethalmi the pleasure of offering talented renditions of praise on the piano or violin, we still recall those times he was able to share his love of music with us. These moments shall not be forgotten. Now we shall be denied the opportunity to have him join with us in worship services here in Alhambra. He will be missed. I'm sure, but we also believe lie's in a much more glorious land where he is with the throngs continually worshiping our great King. So let us prepare for the day when we, too, shall be in the "land of ivorv palaces," where the "bells of heaven ring" and the multitude sings glorious praises to Almighty (iod. And think of it! We might even see our Bro. Ilethalmi directing the heavenly chorus or offering one of his own compositions on a piano grand — an instrument much more magnificent than anv here today. 11 is widow, I'eri. tells me she dreamed about this just moments before (iod called her husband to his eternal home! Sound illogical? Not to “believers” who have had similar experiences. (Yes, I too can relate!) And, Teri, I ask our Great God to grant you and your dear family His Giving Comfort and Solace, knowing you faithfully served your husband and your Lord during these times of stress. You served “Karcsi” with love and tenderness, and now only temporarily have bid him goodby. God bless you as you continue on, and may 11 is peace "which passeth all understanding” sustain you in the years ahead. With sincere love from your brothers and sisters, in Alhambra. Cisneros Caught the _______Thieves Henry Cisneros, the Secretary of Housing, witnessed a crime on the streets of Washington, D.C., and he had the guts to do something about it. He saw two youths grab a few trays full of watches from a street vendor’s table and run away. The good-looking young politician apparently has his heart in the right place - he ran after them, yelling "Stop right there!" Although he did not have a gun, his voice must have projected authority, because they did just that. By that time, the police arrived and arrested the thieves. At a time when the usual advice in America in case of robbery or rape is "Do nothing! Let him take what he wants! It may be dangerous to resist...”, it was refreshing to see that there arc still real men around, who do not turn the other way when they see bandits, but have the courage to stand up to them. It was not the first time Mr. Cisneros helped police to catch criminals. Seven years ago, when he was still the mayor of San Antonio, he helped to arrest the thugs who rammed his car. DR. Pastor Dr. Béla Bónis, (310) 430-0876; Caretaker Dr. Béla Bíró, (310) 597-7459 The sermon was based on John 9, especially on Jesus’s reply to the baffling question: Who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind? It was neither, "but that the works of God might be made manifest in him." Our understanding of how God acts in matters important to us, and why, will always be limited because we are human. Our questions about God’s actions can lead us to expand our vision of God’s presence in our lives, but we may find oursleves, or those whom we love, in a condition that defies explanation. The disciples, the blind man’s neighbors and the pharisees who questioned the truth of the man’s condition from his birth and after his being healed by Jesus, could only ask what their biased expectations and deep prejudices would allow. This is true of us all. What do we do when the answers are beyond our experience, expectations and current knowledge? We either disregard the new evidence before us as irrelevant or attempt to reorganize our lives or programs because of it. The point is that we have to be willing to see with different eyes and hear with new ears the many ways God in Christ is manifested in our daily lives and the world. Jesus’ loving power and compassion was seen in the healing of the blind man. We need to ask not "Who is responsible for this affliction?" but "How can it be turned to God’s glorv?" It is best then that we carry with us a healing balm and word to share with those whom we will meet in unexpected ways and places. The sad general truth is that many people choose spiritual blindness, as the pharisees did, because it spares them something they want to avoid, or it gives them a perverse pleasure, in which neither love nor truth plays any part at all. ★ MARCH 12: after the 11 a.m. service we’ll have lunch, then celebrate the glorious meaning of March 15 with a special program whose chief speaker will be Egyiid Winslow Anna.
