AMERICAN Hungarian Journal Religious Sects and Mind Control According to Friedrich Griess, expert of an Austrian company, the new denominations that have appeared recently in great numbers use methods similar to those of totalitarian systems. Newcomers are welcomed with pronounced courtesy, so they become attached to the group. Once they feel secure and find inner peace, their ties to the outside world are cut off. In the total isolation of the group - where it is not allowed to do, read or even think anything that would strengthen the link with the world outside - a kind of mind control is applied. In the course of this brainwashing, new forms of behavior are forced upon the individual, whose personality is suppressed as he or she becomes more and more a part of the fanaticized group and acquires schizofrenic traits. Griess, whose daughter joined the "Smithian" denomination, which mixes its teachings with Christian elements, studied at length the processes and correlations within religious sects. Once the candidate has become obedient and is cut off from other relationships, he or she is completely stripped of self-esteem and placed under the control of the collective. (How reminiscent of the slogan, "the individual is nothing, the movement is everything", in whose name political leaders were coerced to plead guilty of crimes they did not commit!) It is significant that, after the spectacular fall of totalitarian regimes, there are more than four thousand active sects in the world. They usually appear in the disguise of social or charitable activities, and win even politicians over to their cause, writes Griess. Those who are "trained" for social missions, have to make a commitment to become missionaries in third world countries, and continue to work for the church without compensation. According to Griess, the most dangerous denominations are Jehova’s Witnesses, the Graal Movement, Scientology, Hare Krishna, Children of God and Sahaja Joga. The more aggressive ones, such as the Divine Light Mission, are thought to be connected to bombings and terrorist acts as well. All this may be just sensatonalism, or the exaggerated reaction of a concerned parent. However, there is a trend here worth noticing. It has not been so long that the former "socialist" countries have shaken off the yoke of totalitarian ways. Maybe it’s time to have a sincere talk with the younger generation, and discuss the processes of a past that was too shameful to talk about. Basic Treaty with Russia The Hungarian Foreign Ministry proposed that Parliament ratify the Hungarian-Russian basic treaty, Foreign Minister László Kovács said, adding that the motion would likely be put before the cabinet next week. The basic treaty was signed in Moscow on December 6, 1991 by Hungarian Prime Minister József Antall and Russian President Boris Yeltsin. In January 1993, Hungary’s former government decided to submit it to Parliament and the Foreign Affairs Committee discussed the text. The Russian Duma did not ratify the treaty until last week due to a clause which condemned the intervention that crushed the democratic efforts of the Hungarian people in English Page • by SUSAN JANCSO FIRST HUNGARIAN REFORMED CHURCH 12717 York Ave., Hawthorne, CA 90250 Ph, (310) 355-1475 Adm. Efforts to Stop Smuggling of Radioactive Materials Automatic radiation meters will be installed at most border stations before the end of 1995 to protect the health of border guards and to combat the illegal trade in isotopes, said József Lajtar, director general in charge of economic affairs at the Border Guards. He said the installation of automatic document reading machines would begin later. Equipment expected to examine photographs, the texts of passports and codes therein simultaneously would be put into service in Hegyeshalom, Záhony, Tompa and Biharkeresztes. This extremely accurate equipment will help detect wanted persons and those banned from traveling. Nuclear Elements Shipped to Russia Trains shipping the burnt out heating elements of the Paks Nuclear Power Plant will soon leave for Russia under stringent security measures, although for security reasons the itinerary of the freight train and the date of delivery will not be made public. The Ukranian and Russian authorities have already given t he green light to the shipment. Last year, during Russian Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdyn’s visit to Hungary, an agreement was signed on the processing of heating elements in Russia. Ethnic, religious, racial, and social divisions are being fueled by an uncertain economic situation. Yet it is in such a world that the wondrous breaking-in of God’s Holy Spirit happened on the day of Pentecost. The Spirit came down on a community of disciples gathered in fervent prayer, a community of sharing and mutual understanding, welded together by the study of the Word and by prayer, as we are told in Acts 2:42. The early Church was a Spirit-filled Church, and therefore it was powerful. In Acts 2:4 the emphasis is on the fact that "they were all filled with the Spirit". Every one of the disciples was included in that great outpouring. If only half of them had been filled with the Spirit, the Church would have been only half-filled with the Spirit. And if only Peter, who preached the sermon on that day, had been filled with the Spirit, his sermon would never have had such a tremendous effect upon those who heard it. The power of that Church was the power of its leaders and members. As congregations observe their yearly stock-taking - and empty pews, too - we all should note that a Spiritfilled Church is one that made up of people who are filled with God’s Word, they believe and obey it, they love and teach it. To them the outpouring of the Spirit is more than a fact in the history of the Church; it is a personal experience. They are new creatures in Christ. With His help, may we, in a true sense, become builders of unity, ambassadors of peace, advocates of justice, and witnesses to God’s power. At our meeting we elected Mrs. Ilonka Hady, widow of the Rev. Albert Hady (founding pastor of our church), as honorary elder without term limit. And at the service on Febr. 19 we’ll pay tribute to the blessed memory of John Cariaga who, for many years, was an examplary pillar of our church work in various capacities. Too, we’ll install our new elders in the same time. On Febr. 18 Dr. Bónis will be the featured speaker of the Arany János Kör. His topic is The Religious Poetry5 of Balassa, Berzsenyi and Ady. The Palm Sunday Conference will be held at our church.
