AMERICAN Hungarian Journal Gruesome Murders May Be Related The clues lead to Serbia The city of Szeged, in the south of Hungary, has been engulfed by a wave of fear in the wake of the gruesome murder of a wellknown pastry-maker and his whole family by unknown perpetrators. The killing of Bálint Z. Nagy, his wife and their two children looks like a professional job of execution-style murder. Although the victim was not known to have had any ties with the international madia, the contemporaneous occurence of similar murders costing the lives of 9 persons in the cities of Subotica and Palic (in the former Jugoslavia), caused authorities to suspect that the mafia may be involved. Josip Agatich (34) and his wife were shot in the head in their sleep, and so were the members of another family in the same town, within a few minutes’ time. The two men, heads of the victimized families which had recently become rich, were dealing in tobacco, alcohol, and possibly firearms. Ever since the collapse of the Communist Empire, a number of extremely powerful and cruel mafias sprung up in Russia and the former "socialist countries", particularly Romania and Serbia. The purpose is still the same as in the old days in Sicily, and so are the methods. In order to monopolize the trade of certain highly profitable goods, they offer "protection" to customers in exchange for exorbitant fees. Those who refuse to pay are killed in a spectacular manner, to ensure compliance from the others. This may have happened to Z. Nagy, who had been approached and, what’s worse, boasted all over town that he refused. The police chief of the county of Csongrád traveled to Serbia to find a possible connection, while interior minister Imre Kónya and national police chief Sándor Pintér were investigating on the scene, offering 5 million forints to informants who help capture the murderer(s). Police did arrest a suspect who looked like the alleged murderer, and tried to escape when confronted, attacking a police officer. However, he may not be the one they are looking for. Rumor has it that the real perpetrator is a resident of Palic, by the name of Ivan Sijacki, driving a white Daihatsu geteway car. There is even talk of police involvement, which would account for the scarcity of information on the status of the investigation... Once More About ________Polls________ According to a poll conducted by the research team of the University of Glasgow, socialists may win the upcoming elections in Hungary. They base their findings on the data provided by Modus Kft. When asked who they would vote for if the elections were tomorrow, 25% chose MSZP (Socialist Party), 24% said they would vote for FIDESZ (Young Democrats); 11% for SZDSZ (Free Democrats), 9% for KDNP (Christian Democrats), and a meager 8% for MDF, the present governing party. Statistics, of course, reflect only the momentary moods and inclinations of the people interviewed at the time. For instance, the Gallup Poll made in December shows the Hungarian Democratic Forum (MDF) forging ahead and gaining in votes. Robert Manchin, a Gallup employee, explains how this works. A poll is like a snapshot, completed in a day or two. The December poll coincided with József Antall’s funeral, and this explains why MDF’s votes increased from the earlier 8-10% to 18%. Every time the media treats a party-related event as privileged, that particular party’s popularity, as reflected in the surveys, will increase. The same thing happened to FIDESZ after the convention of Pécs (an increase to 52%); to MSZP after the Charta demonstration in September 1992 in the wake of the Csurka paper (from 10 to 19%); to SZDSZ when Gábor Fodor’s decision to join them was made public (from 10 to 14%). This page written by ATA accredited translator SUSAN JANCSO At the end of January, MSZP further increased its lead, while MDF has improved its position and, with 15%, is closer to SZDSZ and FIDESZ than before. A third poll, that of Szonda Ipsos, concurs that SZDSZ is gaining. However, they show a dramatic decrease in FIDESZ’ popularity. By the end of January, the number of their supporters, within the group interviewed, decreased by 8%. Jeszenszky Signs Partnership for Peace Hungarian foreign minister Géza Jeszenszky signed the Partnership for Peace documents in Brussels last week. At the subsequent press conference, he characterized the partnership as an important step towards strengthening the stability of East-Central Europe, but only the first step, which does not substitute for Hungary’s full-fledged membership in the organization. Jeszenszky is pretty certain the West is not going to keep Hungary out of NATO for long. In any case, as important as the joint exercises and improvements to the army are, he thinks the institutionalization of political dialogue is equally significant. He means not only the possibility of consultation offered in case of a crisis situation, which is a kind of security guarantee, but simply that getting used to being part of the partnership is in itself a strengthening factor. Zhirinovsky Is Journalists* Delight No day passes without the infamous Russian party-leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky offering some spicy bits and pieces of his mind to ever scandal-hungry reporters. In Serbia, he was boasting of a new Russian miracle-weapon that could kill people by sound effect, leaving structures intact. The idea has been heard of before, but if the Russians do possess it, we don’t suppose Mr. Z’s superiors appreciate his "spilling the beans". On his way home from Belgrade, Zhirinovsky had to change planes in Budapest. He almost missed his connection to Moscow, and he became very agitated, yelling on the tarmac, "Hold it! I’m a Russian government official!" He threatened MALÉV employees, calling their operation a "whorehouse" and promising to teach them a lesson when he becomes president. They found a pistol on him, which he was not allowed to take into the passenger cabin. The rest of his luggage was also out of proportion - nine boxes, five handbags and three huge frames - but he threatened to kill everyone if even one of his things gets damaged or misplaced. According to another report, he bodily assaulted the Hungarian captain who carried the firearm for him and handed it over to authorities in Moscow instead of into Mr. Z’s own hands. It would be funny if it weren’t so scary- this man may in fact come into power someday! IT’S PARTY SEASON both in Hungary and in the Hungarian community of New York. Claire Kenneth reports that the Piarist Ball was a lavish and elegant affair, attended by the Hungarian Consul General and his wife, as well as everybody who is anybody in New York. Look for pictures of the most magnificent event of the season in our Hungarian section! John Fercsey brought us the news of another major event, the banquet for 100 lawyers and their families at the Hungarian House of New York. The annual "Lawyers’ Ball" is a long-standing tradition that had provided the means of sustenance for the professional organization all through the years. Some of the same names turned up at both parties: those of the Consul General and his deputies, as well as the Elthes, the Balintitt, the Kenneth-Bardossy families and Erzsi Cserey. Meanwhile, in Budapest the Entrepreneurs’ Ball on January 29 turned out to be the most elegant affair of all. Since last year, people seemed to have acquired some of the skills needed to look and act right in such a gathering. The guest of honor was Gina Lollobrigida, spotlessly beautiful in face and attire - just as we remembered her from... let us not specify how long ago. In spite of her bright red gown, pleated on the bottom and deeply cut at the decolletage, she was not at all risqué but cool and ladylike, and the rest of the program was rich in quality and variety. The only disturbing detail was the woman begging at the door as people were leaving - she turned out to be the widow of a late opera singer who finds it hard to feed her family from the meager pension. Talking about pensions, the Hungarian government just announced that all retirement and social security pensions will be increased by 10 percent as of March 1994. Only those pensions approved by January 1,1994 will be eligible for the increase. The minimum amounts of certain pensions will also be increased by approximately 10 percent. Brody In Concert LOS ANGELES - János Bródy, the successful Hungarian songwriter and lyricist held a solo concert at the Bel Air Crest Clubhouse of the Hungarian Consulate General. He introduced his own songs and accompanied himself on the guitar. The 100 or more strong audience celebrated Bródy as he sang many of his old hits and a number of new ones from the soon-to-appear new L.P. After the performance, András Márton toasted with champagne the celebrity and his audience. Bródy will appear again on February 18 at the Los Angeles Hungarian House. All his appearances are benefit concerts. A Magyar Televízió Szilveszteri műsorai három videokazettán B. U. É.
