AMERICAN Hungarian Journal HUNGARY Before the Elections Election campaigns in America often end with landslide victories and unexpected candidates coming to the fore. Not so in Hungary. Considering the present state of affairs, it seems obvious that no single party can win the elections alone: the only variable is which parties will achieve a feasible coalition for government. The Hungarian Democratic Forum (MDF), the present governing party has lost a lot of confidence because of the slow economic recovery, and the controversy within the party with the Csurka faction. Prime Minister Boross said in a radio interview: The May elections do not figure primarily in the government’s concerns - we concentrate on the daily tasks, implementing our program. It does not pay to think only of victory and to proclaim appealing but impossible slogans. We know our possibilities, and we regard victory as a tool to realize our plans for improvement." SZDSZ, the Free Democrats are actively preparing for governing, but without compromises. "We wish to preserve the purity of the elections. Therefore, we are not willing to acquire funds by making a business pact with the government or its parties" - said party leader Iván Pető. MIEP, Csurka’s Hungarian Truth and Life Party wants to do away with the post-communist practices. On their nationalist agenda, the following items figure prominently: the sanctity of private property, motherhood as women’s main occupation, uncompromising tax-collection, tightening of customs regulations, protection of Hungarian products and commodities, boosting agriculture, lowering unemployment, introducing mandatory public work, infusing education with nationalistic ideas, and removing the remnants of the "Marxist team" and the "Soros Works". In a recent poll, 3.5 percent of MSZP (Hungarian Socialist Party) candidates were certain of victory, 30 percent considered it "very probable," and 56 percent "probable". 35 percent thought * Hungarian Judge in New Jersey PASSAIC - WOLF SAMAY, a Hungarian-born attorney was sworn in as the new Municipal Court judge. He replaces two part-time judges who had been involved in corruption charges and left behind a backlog of 150 thousand cases, some of them going back to 1972, with a money amount of $7 million in fees to be collected. Mayor Marge Semler said Samay is "a very straightforward individual and a honest person, and most capable to do the job." The new full-time judge had the following to say: "I am sure my legal experience will help me to face the challenge of this job, although nothing can really prepare you for it. There is no book or seminar to teach you how to be a good judge. You just ob-SZDSZ was the greatest rival, the others mentioned were the Christian Democrats, FIDESZ and MDF. Besides the major parties, there is an unprecedented number of small parties listed in Hungary today: 125 in all, with membership numbering a from a few thousand to as little as 200. Just to mention a few names: Mothers’ Party, Pensioners Party, Smajl Pensioners Party, Party of the Poor, Party of the Unemployed, as well as Realists, Humanists, Activists, Decents, and there’s even a Happiness Party and a Beer Party. Most of the musrooming small parties may be motivated by the hope of financial gain: they expect support from the state. However, since several parties that had received a sizable financial contribution at the last elections could not even come up with a candidate, things may be different this time: no money until the candidates are named. Some of the minor parties get by on the income of their offices which they rent out; others, like the 10 thousand strong Happiness Party, have enough to spend without aid. And then there is one party wich evokes many frowns: the openly national socialist VNP, whose members wear black uniforms with armbands, salute like the infamous Arrowcross, and have Ferenc Szálasi’s picture in their offices. Their leader, Albert Szabó, who recently returned from Australia, praises the love of the Hungarian race, patriotism which "can never be too strong," a "heroic lifestyle," and would bring back the numerus clausus, making sure minorities are only allowed to enter universities and the job market in proportion to their numbers. Their role model, besides Szálasi, is the man who founded the antisemitic party in Hungary. Even the smallest of the new parties, the 200-strong Legitimists think theirs is the only way to go: for them, it would be constitutional monarchy, with a Habsburg at the helm. * * serve, listen carefully, ask questions, consider all aspects, and then - you jump into the water." Wolf Samay, one of 8 brothers and sisters, graduated from Seton Hall University, and for 10 years maintained a law firm in Morristown with brother Lance. A third brother, Attila, lives in Los Angeles and is one of the contributing writers of our paper. Their mother Maria, who held the Bible at the swearing-in ceremony, can be rightfully proud of her sons. * * * SENLIS, France - GEORGE CZIFFRA, the world-famous concert pianist died in his Senlis home at the age of 72. Cziffra had been a child prodigy, receiving rave reviews as a five-year-old in Budapest. In the fifties, he tried to escape, was caught and had his fingers crushed by prison guards, but luckily he recovered and, after years of playing bars and clubs, he escaped during the This page written by ATA accredited translator SUSAN JANCSO Revolution of 1956. He moved to France, where he became a celebrity overnihgt. In later years he returned to his homeland to set up a foundation for young pianists and to teach. He is mourned by music-lovers and friends throughout the world. BUDAPEST - VIKTOR RONA, the most popular solo dancer of the Hungarian State Opera House died after a long illness, at the age of 58. In addition to being the favorite of Hungarian audiences, Róna had worked extensively at the Oslo, Paris and Milan opera houses, and was honored by the Queen of England. LOCAL EVENTS Paul Badura-Skoda at the Wilshire Ebell On Saturday, February 5, the internationally acclaimed Austrian pianist Paul Badura-Skoda graced the concert of the L.A. Mozart Orchestra with his presence. As usual, the performance was preceded by a preconcert talk with Roger Lebow. After the opening number, the overture to The Marriage of Figaro, the orchestra spread out to make room for a giant Bösendorfer concert piano which was ceremoniously rolled onto the stage. Mr. Badura-Skoda entered amidst great applause and performed Mozart’s Piano Concerto in C minor with the orchestra. Conductor and music director Lucinda Carver was the heart and soul of the evening, with her dinamic personality and her attention encompassing every detail, and every bit of the applause she received was also well deserved. The distinguished guest did not return after the intermission. Although part of his name, "Skoda," is a Czech automobile brand, we later learned that he was driven away - in a Saab! Saab, of course, is one of the generous sponsors of the L.A. Mozart Orchestra. Zsuzsa Esztó Gives Benefit Concert Concert pianist Zsuzsa Esztó, professor of the Hungarian Academy of Music, will give a benefit concert at 3:00 p.m. on February 26, at the Loyola Marymount University (Corner of Loyola Blvd. and West 80th Street, near LAX). (Zsuzsa Esztó and Tamás Roska are man and wife.) The concert is organized by the Hungarian Consulate General in conjunction with Friends of Pázmány Péter University, and all proceeds will be used for the development of the latter. Entry is free, but donations are welcome. For information, call (310) 391-2877. Another Dream Come True: The Bionic Eye Hungarian scientist Tamás Roska, working closely with Leon Chua, of the University of Berkeley, is working on an amazing invention: the bionic eye. When completed, with a supercomputer etched into a thumbnail-size chip, the device will be made to see like a cat, or a salamander, or a hawk, or a person - with nerve circuitry able to pick out some things and pay less attention to others. Such artificial organs - in time - could let the blind see by hooking directly into optic nerves or even the brain. Tamás Roska is one of the most noted pioneers of neurocomputer-science. He will be visiting Los Angeles and hold a presentation at USC on February 24, then on February 27 will meet members of the Hungarian community, after mass at St. Stephen’s Church.
