AMERICAN Hungarian Journal HUFFINGTON - A Leader in the Reagan Tradition Voting Day, Tuesday, November 8th, is only weeks away. Dr. Frank de Balogh, national chairman, Hungarian American Republican Federation, urges California’s Hungarian community to carry out its responsibility to cast an informed vote. In an address to ethnic leaders, he emphasized, "The ’94 election is of great importance to our communities. First, the re-election of Governor Wilson deserves our full support. But secondly, the Senatorial race - Huffington vs. Feinstein - is vital to all Hungarian Americans because of a Senator’s influence on foreign policy. Huffington is a friend of ethnic Americans like us. Feinstein’s role has been to consistently support the weak and ineffective foreign policy of the Clinton Administration. With this race being tied at 42% to 42 percent, we can and will cast the deciding vote - for Huffington!" In order to introduce Congressman Huffington to you, his views on a number of key domestic issues important to California’s voters are briefly summarized below. A future article will address foreign policy, especially his support for NATO expansion to include Hungary. Rebuilding California’s Economy "Dianne Feinstein betrayed California’s taxpayers when she cast the deciding vote for the largest tax increase in history. This 37 billion dollar increase to California taxpayers in Social Security taxes, gasoline taxes and income taxes is a devastating blow to our difficult economic recovery. "Unlike my opponent, I’ve run a business, I know what it takes to create jobs. I will support tax cuts and policies that increase job creation and promote international trade. I will fight to cut the massive government regulations that destroy jobs." Fighting Crime "The first responsibility of government is the protection of its citizens. Crime and the fear it creates ruins lives, destroys communities and makes economic progress impossible. "Swift and certain punishment is the only effective deterrent to crime. The tough ’Three Strikes and You’re Out’ initiative, which I co-chair, will lock up the most dangerous and violent felons for life. I strongly support the death penalty and will vote to eliminate the endless appeals which prevent its enforcement." Reforming Welfare "Over the past thirty years, we’ve spent over 3 trillion dollars on welfare. The results? We have more poverty than when we started. In fact, we are worse off than when we started. Violent crime is up 560%. Teen pregnancy is up 200%. SAT scores are down 80 points. Homelessness and poverty have reached epidemic proportions. "Clearly, more money and more government programs aren’t the answers to our problems. We can’t keep throwing more and more money into the same failed programs and expect a better result. Many federal welfare programs should be replaced with private, community-based volunteer solutions and programs which require work and reward family stability. And we must get the government out of the way so that people with dreams of making a better life can pursue them." Controlling our Borders "America has become a nation without borders and the costs to California are staggering. The federal government has failed in its responsibility to control the border, but has succeeded in forcing California taxpayers to pay three billion dollars per year DR. "We must increase border patrol forces and eliminate the benefits that draw illegals across the border. We can’t keep giving welfare benefits to illegal immigrants. Illegal immigrants convicted of crimes must be deported." Keeping America Strong "Bill Clinton and Dianne Feinstein are dismantling our military capabilities and undermining our respect with an unfocused foreign policy for the United States. They have weakened our defenses to the point that we cannot deal with two regional conflicts simultaneously. "The Clinton/Feinstein defense cut of 122 billion dollars has gone too far. It will cost Californians 179,000 jobs and has left our nation less prepared to defend itself. Russia is dangerously unstable and there are still many trouble spots in the world. We must remain prepared. The wholesale closing of military bases in California was also a mistake."
