AMERICAN Hungarian Journaf JON EDDY in Concert Nelson Eddy, the beloved musical actor and singer of the thirties with Jeannette MacDonald, has a son!! The still significant ranks of MAC/EDD Y fans, who had been lamenting for decades the fact that the world-famous lovers never had a child, were amazed and electrified by the news, which came out a few weeks ago. Jon Eddy with former Nelson singing partner Jack Rourke. His name is Jon Eddy, and he is sixty years old. His mother was not Jeanette MacDonald, but an opera singer Eddy had met before her in Philadelphia. They were engaged, but she came from a prominent family, and her parents did not want her to marry a singer, so when she became pregnant, she went away to give birth and placed the child with a decent family. Jon was well taken care of from both sides, and he also had a chance to meet his father from age 18 on. However, he kept his origins secret until now. Jon Eddy inherited a considerable amount of his father’s great looks and voice (he is a tenor, though - Eddy was a baritone). We met him in the course of a birthday-party-concert, organized by the MAC/EDDY CLUB at the Sportsman’s Lodge on Ventura Blvd. He has all the charisma of a nightclub crooner and all the stature and dignity of an opera singer. He knows all there is to know about the profession, but doesn’t take himself too seriously. He will get up unto the podium, tell a fewjokes, and then- almost as an afterthought - sing a string of his father’s favorite songs. While he sings, he looks at one of the ladies in the audience- usually he picks an oldtimer who must have been there at Nelson Eddy’s debut as well - who is sitting there wearing a hat and gloves and a blissful smile - and charms her right out of this world. Besides being a good singer, Jon Eddy is warm and friendly and very funny - the audience adored him! A young lady by the name of Elin Carlson also appeared on the show as an invited guest singer, and she was fantastic. She walked unto the stage casually, and without any preliminaries, started right into one of the most difficult coloratura arias in the world, from Gounod’s Romeo This page' written by ATA accredited translator SUSAN JANCSO the readers of the American Hungarian Journal and went on to the next fan in line: a distinguished-lookinggentleman wearing a white tux and a Fourth-of July tie, who brought with him an old poster, in which he sings beside Nelson Eddy in a TV show some fifty years ago... That’s how far back the time machine had taken us on that last Sunday in June. Susan Jancso The address of the MAC/ EDDY Club is 101 Cedar Lane, Ste. 201, Teaneck, NJ 07666.
