AMERICAN Hungarian Journal Slovaks Cheer Antall "Hats off to Antall" is the title of a commentary in the Slovakian newspaper Republika. They praise the Hungarian prime minister for a statement he made at the Budapest conference of EDU, to the effect that Slovakia should be among the NATO- members together with Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic. The paper calls it a fine example of European unity and belonging together, and a good sign for the future. They go on to say that it would be nice to believe this is the beginning of better relations between the two countries, because, in spite of their differences, they are historical allies. They note though that Mr. Antall only decided to take this step after Czech prime minister Vaclav Klaus had repeatedly dodged the issue of Slovak problems. The remarks of Republica are noteworthy because they are by no means characteristic of the paper’s stand regarding Hungary. Hungarian Brain Power Helped Create Supercomputer The world’s first programmable analog supercomputer was presented to the press last week in Budapest, at the Academy of Science. It is the result of a joint effort by Leon O. Chua of the University of California, Berkeley, and Professor Tamás Roska of the Hungarian Academy of Science, guest researcher at Berkeley. The computer is called CNN (Cellular Neural Network) because it combines the cellular and neural principles. In a way similar to John Neumann’s work, CNN processes information with a totally new approach, analog instead of logical. A CNN chip can contain up to 10 thousand units (processors) and its speed can reach a value of ten on the 12th. One of the first products based on this principle is the so-called "bionic eye" which is able to model the vision of various species. It promises a real chance that within a few years’ time the blind can be made to see. Other uses for it are space-informatics and robotics. The Times on Eastern _______Europe______ Popular beliefs regarding conspiracy leave little room for tolerance and cooperation in Eastern Europe. It’s lucky that a Serbian type conflict is not likely to break out between Hungary and Romania; however, the ethnic minority struggle threatens Europe with further loss of security. In view of the return of nationalism and intolerance, some regret the passing of the old Empire. Both the Soviet Union and the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy now seem to represent the golden age of peace and tranquillity in their eyes. Of course this too is a distortion, since the Soviet rule and Tito’s communism only smothered the fire, and after their passing, the old hatreds flared up instantly. The British daily also mentions the reburial of Admiral Horthy, Hitler’s ally, and the issuance of a Horthy memorial coin, which is as if the Italians had issued a Mussolini-medal. Conclusion: many statesman of nationalist orientation are political dinosaurs. BUDAPEST Hungarian Market Party Formed Homosexuals, freemasons, former people’s militia members, former AVH officials and party leaders cannot be accepted as members in the newly formed Hungarian Market Party. The seven-member leadership includes recent transfers from MDF, including István Balás, Gyula Zacsek and member of parliament György Szilasi. According to the party founders, the Hungarian people experienced the change of regime as a negative event. Almost all branches of the economy were scaled down, and almost every stratum of society became impoverished. Therefore, the party’s main objectives are: to effect a definitive change of regime, to protect national culture, and to identify and call to account those responsible for the grave cultural, moral, economic and political problems of the country. "Whoever Stole the Statue Was Right" Torgyán’s Smallholders Party held elections on August 7 in the MOM Clubhouse named after Árpád Szakasits, and chose Ágnes Maczó for president. In the meantime, Szakasits’ statue disappeared from the Clubhouse. The statue is the work Zsigmond Kisfaludy-Stróbl, worth 34 thousand Forints. Dr. Sándor Kavassy, second-incommand of the party, claimed it could not have been one of the party members, since they have no love and no use for criptocommunist Szakasits. However, he added, if it was one of them, he did the right thing, since "the statue of a man like this has no place in Hungarian public life". NEW YORK "Me and My Kid Brother" with Guest Star KATA CSONGRÁDI It was a role for Rózsi Bársony when Mihály Eisemann’s operetta first captured the audiences of Budapest. Last Sunday the brilliant Kata Csongrádi fascinated the public of New York with her This page written by ATA accredited translator SUSAN JANCSO dancing and singing in the role of the "kid brother". Writer Claire Kenneth was pleasantly surprised when Kata sang the theme songs from her evergreen novels, "Night in Cairo" and "Rendez-vous in Rome" (lyrics by famous songwriter and Kata’s husband, István S. Nagy, and deeply touched when she jumped off the stage afterward to hand the popular Ms. Kenneth a bunch of roses, amidst the applause of the audience. The performance was staged by Erzsi Cserey, who also had a starring role in it. She is very talented, a great organizer, and also the most beautiful Hungarian actress in America. Other artists featured in the show were: Péter Herz, baritone of the Opera of Kolozsvár, and Mihály Kátai, who was singing Hungarian songs. Mimi Mautner proved again that she is everyone’s favorite, on stage or off. The MC was the elegant and witty Szilárd Szabó. Kata Csongrádi earned a welldeserved applause with her dancing, disguised as a boy. The audiences simply adored her, from London to Paris, to Vienna and Australia. Her next appearance is in Los Angeles, this Friday, September 17th at 7:30 p.m., at the Womens’ Club of Hollywood. Report from Claire Kenneth The Ivan Heczey Show A Good Start to the Fall Season The new Ivan Heczey show last Sunday at the Los Angeles Hilton Hotel started off the fall theatrical season just the way it was supposed to: magnificently. Whatever it takes to put together a successful and entertaining show, Mr. Heczey has got it all: the ability to pick the best performers; the talent to make them want to work with him; the strength to hold them together firmly, yet keep them out of each other’s hair; and a wonderful sense of timing and proportion. (The sense of humor goes without saying...) This year the show featured innovative ideas, a bunch of good jokes, and a lot of exciting music. László Cser’s trio with Lajos Kabók and Tommy Vig received a standing ovation, as did "Besame mucho" performed by Mia Vig, and the final duet of Mia and Lívia Dóra. Elsie Gallay also offered her best in some thirties— style songs from Budapest. Mr. András Márton, Consul General of Hungary, and his wife Adrienne Nagy, honored the occasion with their presence - not only in the audience, but on stage as well. The Golden State Room was filled to capacity (350 people, give or take a few) and they all '< agreed this was the best Heczey show they ever saw.
