AMERICAN Hungarian Journal LOS ANGELES Interview With Márta Mohos "The Jbest entries were written by pupils of religious schools" I interviewed Márta Mohos, General Director of the Historical Museum of Budapest, at the Csárdás Restaurant in Los Angeles. She is here at the invitation of the local chapter of the Hungarian Freedom Fighters Federation, in recognition of her untiring efforts to make last year’s Expo of Immigrant Hungarians for the Homeland the success that it was. Mrs. Mohos has a lovely face framed by short brown hair, a slender, small figure, and a look of bright intelligence and warm humanity in her eyes. Although we were introduced a mere half hour ago, we talk as if we had known each other forever. She has daughters of the same age difference as mine, but somewhat younger, barely out of their teens and experimenting with independence. She talks about the rebirth of religion in Hungary - both in a positive and negative sense, since all sorts of sects are also burgeoning, just like here in the West. I ask her about the Expo and her part in it. She talks about it with much enthusiasm, it is clear that the Expo’s success means a lot to her. She says the timing was perfect, and it was a collective effort of several extremely dedicated people - Éva Szörényi, Lajos Harsányi, the Museum’s cartographer Tibor Piros, and herself - and public personalities such as Prime Minister József Antall and Béla Varga, who helped to impress the significance of the event on those who participated at the opening, almost a year ago, and all the rest who visited it during the time - three times extended - of its duration. The Expo elicited a strong BUDAPEST Banking Scandal in ______Hungary______ The Los Angeles Times reports that a banking scandal has shaken public confidence in Hungary. Forty cases of corruption, representing $220 million, are being investigated. The charge is that large companies bought banks to land money to themselves, and people in high places doled out huge, unsecured sums to their friends. Also the amount of money involved may be just a drop in the bucket compared to the tens of billions of dollars missing from American savings and loans, it has shaken the confidence of some investors who believed Hungary was the safest business partner in Europe. There is also speculation afoot that the cases made public this month may be only the tip of the iceberg, and more discoveries of a similar nature may follow. Hungarian banking officials, however, stress that corruption is a normal accompanying phenomenon of the transition from response, particularly from young people, college students throughout the country. Teachers, particularly teachers of history, would take their entire class up to Budapest, to Castle Hill, to see Vilmos Zsigmond’s film, "Hungary in Flames", and to familiarize themselves with the real facts of history, those that could not be found in the falsified history books of the past 45 years. The response, reflected also in the entries of the book of visitors, was so strong the organizers felt impelled to hold a contest of compositions, by students age 14 through 20, regarding the role of Hungarian immigrants in the world in Hungary’s development, from 1945 to our days. A total of 140 entries have been submitted, all of them wonderful, coming from young people who had no personal experience of the events of 1956 and after, only parents’ or granparents’ tales at best, and who now gained insight and a better understanding of those events. The findings of two separate judging committees - one in Hungary and one in Los Angeles - were similar in that the best entries had been written by pupils of religious schools. The final results of the contest will be announced Sunday at the Cardinal Mindszenty Memorial, in the course of the October 23 commemoration. The Los Angeles Hungarian community will have a chance to meet this wonderful, dedicated lady, Márta Mohos, at that time. Until then, we congratulate her on the great job she has done of the Expo, and, I am sure, on all her other assignments. By Susan Jancso centrally planned to capitalistic economy, and a direct consequence of the growth of the black market economy. It is the urgent responsibility of the banks to reveal cases of this nature and establish internal controlling systems to prevent their repeated occurrence. Hungarian National Bank President Peter Akos Bod dismissed comparisons of Hungary’s banking scandal to that of the American Savings and Loans. He insisted that there were no signs of a nationwide run on deposits or a general decline in public confidence in the banks. On the contrary, he thinks that in the long run the quick response to these problems will strengthen business confidence rather than undermine it. Fare Hike for MALÉV The price of airline tickets for MALÉV, Hungarian Airlines, is expected to increase by ten percent as of November 1,1993. The increase is based on an agreement with IATA. Foreign airlines with a stake in the This page written by ATA accredited translator SUSAN JANCSO Hungarian scene have been trying for some time to achieve the possibility for ticket prices to reflect changes (devaluations) of the Forint. MALÉV has been flying the Paris route in spite of the strike of French airline employees. They did not carry cargo, only passengers, and an extra load of fuel -just in case! Hungarian-U.S. Military Negotiations General Merrill A. McPeak, the visiting chief of staff of the U.S. Air Force, discussed issues of the Hungarian-American military cooperation with Hungarian Minister of Defence Lajos Für. Hungarians would like to see the installation of stranger/friend recognition systems into fighter planes as soon as possible, and further U.S. aid in modernizing the Hungarian Air Force has also been promised. The training of Hungarian officers in the U.S. will also continue. Stalin - a Honorary Citizen? Gábor Demszky, Mayor of Budapest, vetoed a plan to place a memorial plaque on the wall of City Hall which would include the names of all honorary citizens. The reason for his decision is that one of the names is that of Josip Vissarionovich Stalin, who was elected Honorary Citizen of Budapest in 1947. No one was awarded this distinction in the years that followed, from 1947 until 1992, but last year the tradition has been revived. According to spokesman Mihály Rádai, the Committee of City Improvement, the agency that proposed the installation of the plaque, had no other alternative but to have the names of all honorary citizens included, or none of them before 1992. Therefore, they chose to include Stalin’s name, saying they had no intention to re-write history. His being selected for this distinction in that year simply characterizes the period.
