Meetings in Joyce Kilmer Post Room, 17 Codwise Ave. Your Health From the Medical Society of the State of Pennsylvania and the Allegheny County Medical Society "Eh? What’s that? Speak up, I can’t hear you!” Wax in the ears can make hearing difficult. Cerumen is a waxlike secretion within the external passageway of the ears and its purpose is to ensnare dust and dirt. Ordinarily, earwax dries as it moves outward and is shed imperceptibly. In some persons, earwax does not dry and is not shed fast enough to keep the canal fairly clean In these cases, the wax packs around the eardrum and plugs the ear canal from the eardrum outward for a short distance Impacted wax in the ear canal causes a slight deafness and sometimeg pain, vague noises, dizziness, Und nausea. Removal of earwax is sometimes difficult. Physicians usually wash out the wax with warm water. This is not done if the eardrum has been perforated or when there is eczema present. In such conditions, the wax may be removed by suction. Suction offers the advantage of withdrawing- material from the ear canal without danger of pushing the wax toward the eardrum. Dried wax should be removed by a physician.
