270 EXCURSIONS AROUND THE TOWN The reconstructed centre of the village St Ladislaus lookout chapel Statue of Prince Ladis­laus by Lajos Józsa Mogyoród This is a memorable place in Hungarian history: Prince Géza and Prince Ladislaus defeated the army of King Solomon supported by the German emperor here in 1074. With the loot they built a church and a monastery that got destroyed without a trace in the course of time. The place of the monastery is marked by a park and a monument on today's Klas­­trom (i. e. monastery) Hill. It was populated by Hungarian and Slovak settlers. The Gosztonyi and Rudnay families were among its landlords, whose mansion provided ac­comodation for Prince Paskevics, the chief commander of the Russian forces coming to suppress the Hungarian War of Independence in 1849. In the 1860s József Rudnayand his wife Szilárda Veres entertained several famous Hungarian writers such as Kálmán Mikszáth and Imre Madách.
