Éva Vámos: STEAM, WATER, VACUUM

The "Espresso" coffee machine was made of metal, with a bridle to fix the lid. From its outlet tubes coffee flowed into two cups at the same time. Coffee machines with flasks (bulbs) were manufactured as well, in sizes for 6 and 12 persons, respectively. They had to be placed on external heat sources. The factory, however, produced electric cooking plates as well. The factory was nationalized in 1949, and merged with the "Factory of Electric Appliances and Material". The well-known trade mark of the latter was EKA. This factory was then, in 1964, included among the factories of the "Works of Electric Equipment and Appliances". The Ganz Electric Share Company is famous for other things as its coffee machines. However, right from the beginning of the 20 t h century's first decade it offered elegant electric coffee machines. The electric workshop of the "Ganz et Co. Iron Casting and Machine Factory" had been founded by András Mechwart in 1878. The factory building in Lövőház street was completed in 1897. in its days of glory the electrotechnical factory had 2000 workers and employees. They produced elegant, nickelplated coffee pots with electric heating in various sizes. The Manfréd Weiss Steel and Metal Works was the big company which earliest started dealing with casting aluminium coffee machines. It was during the leadership of Márton Solti, outstanding expert of aluminium casting that the factory purchased Giordano Robbiati's patent "Apparatus for preparing espresso coffee". After WW 2 the domestic pioneer of aluminium casting was compelled to leave the Csepel plant. He founded a new firm and took with him his plans and ideas. On March 1, 1946 the retired chief engineer Márton Solti and his companion, Béla Attl, leader of a tool factory founded the small private firm in 22 Liget street in the 10 t h district of Budapest, under the name of "Qualital Metal Foundry and Processing Plant". The firm's name gave a perfect idea of its profile and its endeavour aimed at manufacturing aluminium products of high quality. After starting production, the company satisfied the important and urgent needs of the country in the state of being rebuilt, by producing aluminium castings and products made of them (processed pistons for vehicles, bobbins for spinning plants, fire-fighting armatures etc.). They even exported 50.000 pistons. The second seat of the factory was the piece of land in 24-26 lászberényi street in Budapest, next to a railway side track, where the processing of waste aluminium was possible, too. The 1000-t aluminium block transported to Italy at the end of 1947 was produced, among others, from wreckages of aircrafts, and other wastes. Their first product based on the purchase of a licence, the highly successful ATOMIC coffee machine served the satisfaction of direct demands of the population in 1948. After the nationalization of the company in 1849 the manufacture of sand-casting started, and the manufacture of cast blocks and of casting tools developed dynamically, too. On July 1, 1963 the company got under the direction of the Csepel Iron and Metal Works. In 1965 the factory unit Ape of the Hungarian Iron Alloy Factory was annexed to it with the aim of establishing there a light-metal foundry and waste processing plant. The main goal was to ensure premises, in county Heves, for the factory to be shifted from the capital for reasons of environment protection. The development of the mould-foundry started in Ape in 1965, and almost at the same time the investment work for the tool manufacturing plant and the waste processing base was launched. In 1968 even the management of the company settled in Ape, and the organisational structure meeting the demands of the enlarged profile was established. 106
