had to stop due to the snow. He left the Carpathians on 17 October. He collected more than one thousand plants. Wahlenberg went to Pest and Buda, where he met Pál Kitaibel (1757-1817). He just needed a few months to write his great work, Flora Carpathorum Principarium . ORDEALS OF A FIELD BOTANIST ahlenberg had to endure several ordeals in the Carpathians. He did not establish good relationship with the local people in the mountains, who thought him a very unpleasant man. The difficult character of the researcher and the superstitious belief of the local people can explain this situation. There were disastrous floods in the region in this year, and the people blamed Wahlenberg for the losses. It was impossible for Wahlenberg to find someone to carry his luggage. There were frequent storms, which also tried the physical strength of the researcher, who got his training on the Swedish fjells. WAHLENBERG'S CONTRIBUTION TO PLANT GEOGRAPHY Cy he founder of Swedish plant geography, in contrast to his predecessors, was vrix not simply satisfied with collecting the individual plant species: he also observed the geographical setting of the place, including the elevation above sea level, and carried out measurements. Wahlenberg considered himself a follower of Linné, but at the same time he did much more than those who only described the flora. Wahlenberg was not only interested in what he found, but also wanted to know the place where he found the plant and - first of all - why the plant lived there. Wahlenberg thought it important to return to the same place several times to have additional observations. His principle was to take as precise measurements as only possible. WAHLENBERG'S IMAGE OF THE CARPATHIAN MOUNTAINS / ahlenberg's travel diary is our most useful source of information. His records contain almost entirely only lists of plants. He divided the mountain
