What do Friends of Museums contribute to museums and to society as a whole? What are their fields of activity? (see more www.icom.org) HUNGARY The International Museum Day will be celebrated in the Hungarian National Museum Garden with the participa­tion of museums and museum friends of Hungary. Date: 17-18 May, Saturday - Sunday, from 10 AM until 19 PM The new acquisitions of the Hungarian National Museum can be seen in our recent issue as a supplement of Museum Newsletter, where the museum profes­sionals contribute their special thanks to donators, mostly private persons, to friends of the museum. Special temporary exhibitions for the occa­sion of Museum Day 2003 BUDAPEST In Europe's Princely Courts Ádám Mányoki - Actors and venues of a portraitist's career Hungarian National Gallery It can be visited until 24 August 2003 The majority of Mányoki’s works are preserved in foreign collections, so this exhibition was staged with broad inter­national participation. Apart from the major partners in Dresden and Berlin- Brandenburg, six German, three Polish and a Slovakian museum and library lent works for the exhbition, while the Hungarian museums and collections provided valuable material as well. That coincided with the beginning of Rákóc­­zi’s war of independence the 300th anni­versary of which is celebrated this year. One of the three Rákóczi’s portraits is a protected private property, which can be seen as well in this exhibition. Curator: Ms Enikő Buzási, art historian (Hungarian National Gallery). You can read her summary on pages 147-148. Greek Jewellery Museum of Fine Arts Open from 15 May until 30 June 2003 After Prague and Warsaw the wandering exhibition will arrive to Budapest. On display are the precious gold jewellery of Greek museums from the prehistoric pectorals till the Byzantine earrings and necklaces. The exhbition is supported by the European Union. It can be visited until 7 September 2003. NEW TEMPORARY EXHIBITIONS BUDAPEST Ganz Factory in the Golden Age of the Hungarian Electrotechnics Hungarian Electrotechnical Museum On the 150th anniversary of Károly Zipernowsky’s birth a conference and an exhibition was opened about the his­tory of Ganz Factory. On display are ob­jects from the collections of Deutsches Museum (Munnich), Budapest Histori­cal Museum and the National Techni­cal Museum of Hungary. GÖDÖLLŐ The Golden Man - The Greek owner of Gödöllő Castle, György Sina and Simon Sina City Museum 1 March-21 September 2003 The curator of this exhibition Ms Eszter В. Kerényi researched the true story of the ‘Golden Man', who was the main figure of Jókai's book. She investigated Greek archives, original documents and letters written in Greek languague about the forgotten, extremely rich Sina family. Between 1850 and 1864 the 'royal' Castle was owned by a civil merchant and his son, and after their left for Vienna the castle became the property of the Hungarian King as a gift of the Hungarian people. Eric Vogel Works Royal Castle Museum 9 May - 1 June 2003 As a part of the renewed Baroque The­atre in the castle, an exhibition was opened for the memory of the famous Hungarian costume designer, Mr Eric Vogel (1907-1996).
