SZÁM Summary Zsolt Simon LAJOS TARCZY THE AUTHOR OF THE FIRST STUDY BOOK ON ASTRONOMY IN HUNGARIAN LANGUAGE Philosopher and scientist Lajos Tarczy studied at Calvinistic College in Pápa, and after finishing his studies at the theological academy he carried on with his studies at the universities of Vienna and Berlin. From 1833 until his death, he was the professor of the academic faculty of the Calvinist College in Pápa. At the beginning he taught philosophy and science for a short while. He became known as the one who spread Hegel’s ideas in Hungary. He wrote several study books two of which were published in 1838: the Science in two volumes and the Popular Astronomy (Astronomia Popularis) — he considered the latter one as the main work of his life. Current study reviews the professor’s books, scientific ideas in detail, and gives a picture of the change of the subjects of the college. It stresses that from the age of Enlightenment, human subjects were overshadowed and science subjects became popular. Lajos Tarczy played a big role in forming the modern scientific approach. His students bore his memory in mind decades later for forming their development and ideas. <!/ A/y—■» ’40-
