Guldens of the Hungarian King Nagy Lajos (Lewis the Great, 1342 —1382), coined in Körmöcbánya Stephan Anton Kochlatsch is the author of a medical treatise which he published under the title De metallicolarum nonnullis morbis in 1721 in Halle, describing some thirty cases of occupational diseases he had observed in miners during his term as medical practitioner in Selmec 5 . The cases in his records correspond in appearance to the clinical pictures of silicosis and chronic lead poisoning. Moller of Besztercebánya published in 1730 a disquisition De aere fodinarum r \ making the atmosphere in the local mine shafts responsible for its pathogenic effect on the human organism. All these papers bear witness of what a high level was then obtained in mining technology and health in the mining district at Upper Hungary. Queen Maria Theresa ordered in 1770 the first mining academy of the empire to be set up at Selmec, thus adding to the fame and appreciation of the place and of the surrounding mining basin. Teaching as physician and conducting research studies in the period 17031769 at the mining school of Selmec was Joseph Jacquin who was invited later to move as university professor to Vienna 7 . Taking over his place as professor at the miners academy and teaching from 1769 to 1779 was Gian Antonio 5 Kohlatsch, S. A.: Dissertatio inauguralis medica de metallicolarum nonnullius morbis.
