Later on most of the professors of the University of Buda had turned Protestants and had left Hungary. All this and the occupation of Buda by the Turks brought about the cessation of the university. The fact that a university existed in Hungary even in 1530 is testified by the letter of Croke, English ambassador in Venice. In connection with the impending divorce he writes to his sovereign King Henry V111. as follows: "Doubt not that all Chrs. universities, if handled will earntly conclude for the king. Think it would be very expedient to obtain their assent in Italy, France, Almagne, Austria, Hungary and Scotland 1 '. THE UNIVERSITY OF NAGYSZOMBAT On May 12, 1635 Cardinal Péter Pázmány archbishop of Esztergom, founded a university in Nagyszombat (now Trnava in Czechoslovakia). In those days both Buda and the archiépiscopal (primate) residence (Esztergom) were still under Turkish occupation. For this reason also the archiépiscopal residence was removed to Nagyszombat, The university was working under ecclesiastic authority, originally the faculties of theology and philosophy had been established then in 1667 it was completed with the faculty of law. The archival research work of Tibor Győry had brought to light why the Medical Faculty had not been originally established. Péter Pázmány thought medical education important, and for this reason he repeatedly turned by letter to Mutio Viteleschi General of the Order of Jesuits and to Cardinal Francesco Barberini undersecretary to the Vatican (National Archives of Budapest, Cancellaria Jesuitica, Coll. Tyrn. fasc. 8, No. 12). Though the plan of Pázmány concerning the establishment of the medical faculty was supported by Viteleschi, Barberini disagreed with him, he thought namely that a university could exist without medical faculty. Because of this unfavourable reception in Rome the establishment of the medical faculty failed to be realized. It is also laid down by Győry that the problem was not the disagreement on a matter of principle connected with the medical faculty or medical education. The reticence of the papal court was the consequence of the political conflict between Emperor and King Ferdinand II. and Pope Urban VIII. THE "SCHOLA MEDICINALIS" OF EGER The Hungarian public health was vitally affected by the lack of the medical faculty. János Dániel Perliczy chief medical officer of the county Nógrád met the common wish of all Hungarian physicians when in 1751 he addressed a petition to Queen Maria Theresia Ín the cause of establishing a medical faculty and a central medical library. Though the project had already been discussed after the lapse of some months by the standing committee of health, and at the proposal of József Perbegg physician-member of the committee it had been submitted for approval in favour of the medical faculty, yet there was no decision for years. Therefore Perliczy turned to the head-physician Ferenc
