THE SEMMELWEIS UNIVERSITY OF MEDICINE The Jesuit University of Nagyszombat (founded in 1635) was completed with a medical faculty by an order of Maria Theresia dated from November 7, 1769. The university was transferred to the Capital in 1777. During the past 200 years more academies and universities became independent from the branches and institutes of the classic university, as the engineering and veterinary colleges or the theological college. The four branches of the university as those of law, philosophy, natural science and medicine were functioning within the scope of the Pázmány University till 1951. The medical faculty became independent and the remaining three branches as the Loránd Eötvös University (called after the name of one of its fameous professors) continued their activity. The medical faculty is functioning now as the Budapest University of Medicine and has 3 branches as the medical, pharmaceutical and odontological faculties. At the 200th anniversary of the foundation of the Hungarian medical faculty the Budapest University of Medicine was honoured by the changing of its name in "Semmelweis University of Medicine" by an order number 22, as from November 7, 1969. Ignaz Philipp Semmelweis finished his philosophical studies and a part of his medical studies (2nd and 3d year) at this university and he became later the professor of gynaecology and obstetrics of this university between 1855 — 1865. As his person and activity are so closely linked to the Budapest medical faculty, it is an honour for the university, if it is called now after the name of this great Hungarian authority. V. R. H. A BÉCSI EGYETEM AJÁNDÉKA A SEMMELWEIS ORVOSTUDOMÁNYI EGYETEMNEK Értékes ajándékkal lepte meg a Bécsi Egyetem a budapesti Semmelweis Orvostudományi Egyetemet. Az ottani egyetem nagy pecsétjével díszített, vörös bőrkötésű albumban átadták az egyetemi levéltár Semmelweisszel kapcsolatos 24 aktájának, illetve aktacsomójának fénymásolatát. A nagyszerű válogatás jórészt Erna Lesky professzornőnek, a Bécsi Egyetem Orvostörténeti Intézete vezetőjének tudományos kutatását tárja elénk. Jelkép is ez az ajándék: azt mutatja, hogy Semmelweis személye és munkássága nem elválasztja, hanem összeköti azt a két egyetemet, amelynek egyaránt volt a hallgatója, majd az egyiknek asszisztense, a másiknak professzora. S minél inkább kiemeli a történelmi távlat és az orvostörténeti kutatás Semmelweis jelentőségét, annál inkább látjuk, hogy a szorosan vett szakterületen túl hidat jelent ő a magyarság és Európa egyetemes kultúrája között is. Az első dokumentum Semmelweis 1846. február 5-én kelt kérvénye az I. sz. szülészeti klinika asszisztensi állásáért. A kérvény felzetén jelzett 23 melléklet közül második facsimileként láthatjuk a Klein professzor által összeállított „Kompetenten Tabelle"-t. — A következő irat Semmelweisnek 1847 januárjában német-, franciaországi és angliai tanulmányút engedélyezése iránt beadott kérelmével foglalkozik, ami új adalék bécsi évei élettörténetéhez. Érdekes ugyanebből az évből az asszisztensi alkalmaztatása meghosszabbításával foglalkozó irat, valamint i8 Orvostörténeti Közlemények 55—56.
