treat that at length. The number of people making a living out of these professions greatly exceeded that of the physicians or the surgeons. For example in two accidentally surviving records of the vine-tithe, which list a part of the vine-growing population of the town, one can find the name of six barbers in 1505 and around 1510. Three of them lived up on the Castle Hill, in the best situated streets, the fourth lived in today's Víziváros (Water-district, then called Saint Peter's Town), while the residence of the rest is not known [54], In addition, the same tithe-lists mention the barber of Kings Matthias and Ulászló II, István of Raguza, who was interested in trading, too, and later acquired an estate, was made a nobleman, became constable and finally holder of Óbuda on pawn [55]. In the light of the evidence at our disposal the barbers—even apart from the royal barber who became a great lord—did not belong to the poorest section of the population, though they did not reach the level of patricians. Some additional examples: the barber Ottó owned a house in the Mindszent (to-day: Uri) Street of the Castle Hill [56]. Bálint Nemegyi, a barber at Buda, bought an estate at Csepel from his relatives living there [57], The financial position of the barbers can be judged also from the tithelists: Vintage of some Buda barbers (in köböls) [58] Name 1505 c. 1510 János 405 160 István 335 108 János (other) 306 177 Miklós 155 16 Bálint 70 38 Albert 24 30 Péter — 85 Total: 1295 614 It should be added that around 1510 the vintage at Buda was generally much worse than five years earlier. On the avarage a barber had 215,8 and 87,7 köböls of wine respectively (One Buda köböl was equivalent to 8,484 litres.) [59]. By comparison, the vintage of the bath managers was significantly lower, which suggests that economically they were worse off. In 1505 the total vintage of three bath managers : Bálint Pesthy, György and László Fürdős was 193, around 1510 (of Bálint and László) 325 köböls all together. Only László had more than
