31. Pair of silver-gilt altar cruets, Nagyvárad (Oradea) Cathedral, c. 1500 pearance up until the present day. From the 1470s onwards new trends appear in altar art as well. In the place of the earlier altars of modest dimensions, altars of great di­mensions on southern German models, giv­ing an illusion of space and blurring the sharp borders between woodcarving and panel-painting, were constructed. The wing­ed altar in the Church of St. Jacob, Lőcse (Levoca), the work of Master Paul, is an ex­ample of early 16th century altar art in Hungary which used sculptural elements in a profuse manner. The stramm of town burghers employed in the import trade consisted for the most part of foreigners of German origin; they com­prised the wealthiest stratum in Buda and in the border-towns.
