And this in­tention will probably, or almost certainly, define the artistic character of the future artists' colony," Károly Sztrakoniczky concluded. 32 Gradually, the larger towns were all thinking about setting up an artists' colony, which evidently was considered an indispensable pre­condition of a settlement's rise to a regional centre (Arad) 33 or a neces­sary part of its cultural offerings (Nagyvárad, Budapest). Máramaros tried to win back its "disloyal" inhabitant, Simon Hollósy, while Nagyvárad invited Vilmos Perlrott Csaba to direct its planned artists' colony. 34 Eventually, only the Budapest artists' colony for sculptors on Százados Street 35 was realized, thanks to the urbanist mayor István Bárczy. Initially, Ödön Márffy was put in charge of the institution, where some of the voluntary disciples of the artistic rebellion worked (Dezső Czigány, Bertalan Pór, Béla Kádár), right until the outbreak of the real war, when they were pressed into compulsory enlistment.
