A series of celebrations accompanied the opening of the exhibition. Munkácsy attended an evening reception given by Count Apponyi, followed by another one organized at the Academy. However, he had to leave the reception early, as he felt unwell. He was taken directly to Baden-Baden first; from here he was transferred to a mental hospital in Endenich near Bonn a year later. He never again regained his consciousness.
