M AGY Alt EGYHÁZ 11 lawns, but a wild, windblown field with pools so deep they cannot be fathomed, with fruit so unusual it has never been classified, and with flowers so rare they have never been catalogued. There is no royal road to truth. Religion is not a closed affair. Huxley found God in the search for duty. Mendelssohn found Him in the search for melody. Keats found Him in the search for beauty. When doubts go unresolved and questions go unanswered, then comes a voice saying, “Be still and know that I am God.” Jesus said to His own disciples, “It is not for you to know the times or the seasons.” You cannot think your way to God by puncture-proof arguments. People believed in God long before they had an argument for His existence. It is possible to believe in God and to trust Him unreservedly even though you cannot present positive proof of His existence. The Bible does not make a virtue of doubt. No person will ever come to the place where all intellectual doubts will be resolved. Even if he did, that would not make him a Christian. God does not ask for cleverness but humility. Lincoln was right: “Accept all you can by reason and the rest by faith, and you will live and die a better man.” There may be much about religion which you cannot accept or believe, but there is much more you can accept. If you could prove to my intellectual satisfaction, which you cannot, that there is no God, I would still believe. If you could prove, which you cannot, that prayer is of no more significance than the air vibrations which it sets into motion, I would still pray. If intellectual acumen were the sole basis of discipleship, we ought to be angels living in paradise. When you deny God, you will run into moral disaster. When life gets you down, when doubts keep crowding in on you, when hope no longer sees the stars and love no longer hears the rustling of the leaves, when it is touch and go, when the scales are evenly balanced, when the world is too much for you, God stands in the shadows by your side. We must go home, we must go home again, Our rainy faces pelted in the dust Creep back from the vain quest of endless strife To find not anywhere in all of life A greater happiness than blest us there. We must go home, we must go home again. PULPIT VACANCY Pulpit vacancy in a bilingual pastorate, United Presbyterian Church of Wharton, N. J... The team from the Lorantfy Society preparing the monthly sausage-sale so faithfully and so productively has grown during the last two years into a “membership” of over 30 people including women from the Junior Guild and men.
