Four years later it was reorganized again, as the Vas County 1848-9 Honvéd Association (Vasmegyei 1848/49. évi Honvéd Egyesület). According to the statutes, the society was to remain in existence while there were still any needy 1848-9 honvéd alive. The records of the society end with the year 1914, but the exact time of its disbandment is not known. VAS COUNTY NATIONAL MINORITIES AND 1848-9 The events of March 1848 were received eagerly in districts inhabited by minorities, as they were all over the country. As the historian Mihály Horváth wrote at the time, the seemingly attainable vision of a common freedom served to melt the 'icecrust of racial hatred'! It made brothers of the common mothercountry's citizens of all native languages. The fervour aroused by the common possession of liberty rose as one flame in all the minority members, from the Carpathians to the Turkish frontier.' However, the Croats reacted to the outbreak of the revolution in many respects differently from the other minorities, by voicing strongly separatist ambitions (union of Croatia and Slavonia with Dalmatia). They also sought to protect the Slovenes, Vas County's other Slav community, from 'Illyrian' ideas.Illyrianism was a linguistic, cultural and political movement. The idea underlying it was that all the South Slavs belonged to one nation, the Illyrian nation, and were all descended from the Illyrians of antiquity. All the Slav peoples between the Adriatic and the Black Sea would be incorporated into a single Illyrian state, implicitly to be under Croatian leadership. The Illyrian movement gained support from the Habsburgs, who saw in it a potential counterweight to the Hungarian reform movement. Conflicts between the Hungarians and the national minorities already surfaced when the national guard was being formed. The leaders of the various movements spread the rumour that the Hungarians were intent on using the national guard to oppress and exterminate the minorities. Almost half the population of the Vas County of 1848 belonged to the German community.
