Régészettudomány - Magdolna Vicze - Nagyrév symbolism revisited: Three decorated vessels from Százhalombatta and Dunaújváros

Régészettudomány less complex and more decoration-like the elements applied the less power or authority the owner and its community might display. It must be noted here, that several important pieces of pottery have not been grouped or discussed. For example, the artefacts depicting the mentioned comb-like symbols 7 7 or the small amphora with its complex „story" from Budapest-Pannonhalmi str. 7 8 and the similar beakers from Tószeg 7 9 and Mokrin. 8 0 Further all those vessels where the symbols appear individually, or without apparent structure like on the fragments from Csepel-Háros and Gerjen. 81 Based on their iconography these finds can and should be sorted to their individual categories and groups, but it lies outside the scope of this paper. I hope that in due time more and more finds will be published then the definition of categories could be made more clearly and detailed. Regardless of the fact that these have not been grouped now, in my understanding they do not alter, but rather emphasise the over all concept presented above. At the beginning of this paper I mentioned that these symbols recur on different materials and objects in varying techniques. This means that the same range of visual imagery extends to other media. See for example the incised boar's tusk or the plastic ornamentation on the wall from Tiszaug. 82 The plastic ornamentation appears on different clay objects like the ones from Tiszaug 8 3 or Tószeg 8 4 also. The usual incision with incrustation can be present on clay objects like the ones from Tolna county. 8 5 It is important not to forget the dress and other possible body ornamentation, which lead us to a to the different media. All these if nothing else suggests the presence of ritual specialists in Nagyrév society. 77 see BANNER János 1958; and SCHREIBER Rózsa 1984. 82 CSÁNYI Marietta-STANCZIK Ilona 1991-92.
