Fig. 81: Distribution areas of the Árpád Period regional groups Area between the Danube and Tisza rivers This region is represented by the following series: No. 106,107,110, 111, 117, XIII, XIV. These are practically all Europoid samples. The brain case is long, narrow and of medium height (dolichocran, orthocran, acrocran, eurymetop). The facial skeleton is medium wide and medium high (mesen). The orbita is narrow and low (mesoconch). The nose is medium wide. The most distinctive characteristics of this population relative to the other regional groups is the narrow facial skeleton. From the distribution area of this group shown in Figure 81 no taxonomically different population is known from the Árpád Period. The probability of the assumption that the northwestern part of the area between the Danube and Tisza rivers was populated by a different type or at least not exclusively by this group is shown by three small fragments of a population which unfortunately are not sufficient for detailed analysis /in themselves. All three are characterized by meso-brachycran skull form: Áporka (Nemeskéri 1948), Budapest-Képtárkert (Nemeskéri 1950) Budapest-Csepel, Királymajor (Nemeskéri 1949). Eastern Transdanubia This region is represented by the six following samples No: 118, 119, XII, XVII, XVIII, XIX. Its population is known only from Fejér county, and mostly from the area of the city of Székesfehérvár. The included series are almost entirely Europoid. The brain case is of medium length, medium width and medium height (mesocran, orthocran, metriocran, metriometop ), the facial skeleton is medium wide and medium high (mesen), the orbita is medium wide and low (mesoconch) . The nose is of medium width. This Eastern Transdanubian group has the shortest brain case of all the samples from the Árpád Period available for study. Only data from further excavations and research may answer the question of were there different types of populations present in the same area ? The few data published to date in this topic are not yet enough in number to cast light on the problem (Acsádi-Nemeskéri 1958). Western Transdanubia This region is represented by the six following samples: No. 113, 115,116,120, XV, XX. Their craniological character is basically entirely Europoid. The brain case is long, medium wide and of medium height (mesocran, orthocran, metriocran, metriometop), the facial skeleton is medium wide and low (mesen). The orbita is narrow and low (mesoconch), while the nose is medium wide. The main characteristics of this Western Transdanubian regional group is the low facial skeleton. No other kind of popula118
