Herman Ottó és Miskolc 373 Felsőhámori temető (Puskaporos utca) Herman Ottó 1914. december 27-én halt meg Budapesten. Akkor a Kerepesi temetőbe temették. 1965. szeptember 11-én hamvait végakaratának megfelelően Miskolcra hozták, s a Hámori temetőben újratemették (Herman 1965, 4). Sírja fölé ideiglenesen a régi sírkövét állították fel, majd 1979-ben Varga Miklós szobrászművész faragott süttői kemény mészkőből új síremléket, rajta a haldokló sas figurájával (B. D. 1979, 2). A mellette lévő két sírban Herrmann Ede Károly, a tudós édesapja és Vásárhelyi István nyugszik. Béke poraikra! During his eventful life, the scholar visited many places, but Miskolc was the town where he always gladly returned to. Ottó Herman was born in Breznóbánya (Brezno, Slovakia), and he was 12 when he moved to Alsóhámor [a village annexed to Miskolc] with his family. He went to the school on Kishunyad street a Lutheran middle school at the time - the building still exists. He learnt proper Hungarian in middle school, and was introduced to patriotic sentiments by Károly Máday, his teacher and school principal. Ottó Herman was so deeply disappointed when, after the fall of the war of independence of 1848—49, students were obliged to use German that he refused to go to school. His parents made him study locksmithery, and he started work in the machine factory at Korompa. His father died early, and Herman moved from Hámor with his mother and sister Ludmilla in 1863. His other sister however, Henrietta Herman, became the wife of Sámuel Szűcs, a lawyer from Miskolc, and Ottó Herman visited them frequendy later on. In 1885, he married Kamilla Borosnyay in the church of hill Avas. Record of the marrige is still present in the registers of the Reformed parish of Miskolc-Avas. In and around Miskolc, plentiful curious rocks were found. In order to identify them, Ottó Herman initiated excavations, that finally confirmed the paleolithic origins of the finds. Being a great enthusiast of nature from his childhood, Ottó Herman spent a lot of time in the woods of the Bükk until his later years. His permanent home was in Budapest, but in 1889 he purchased land in Lillafüred, where he built a small house to spend regularly there summers relaxing, working, fishing trout and walking in the forest.
